How to clean encaustic tile?
The tiles in my vestibule are intact but extremely dirty, with a hundred years’ worth of ground in dirt. I have tried various cleaning solutions and brushes to clean them but have had little success. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Instead of tile and grout cleaners I simply pour a small amount of Cascade Liquid Dishwasher Detergent all along the grout, and allow to sit for 30 minutes, then wipe with a damp cloth, and poof nice and white!! http://www.tile-grout-equipment.com/

Additionally, once a marble restoration co. gets your floor clean and polished if you want polished, they will recommend a new sealant to help keep it that way. One consideration: If they get your floor clean and use impregnators to seal it, consider an additional light coat of clear paste wax which you buff occasionally. This can make a huge difference in upkeep.

I have also heard of people making a paste of damp granular dishwasher detergent and letting it pull oily stains out of porous surfaces. But really for a profesional approach call a marble restoration guy. Even tho your tile is not marble (probably) they will know what to do.

http://www.howtocleanstuff.net/how-to-clean-marble/#RemovingStainsFromMarble Try poultice method (in above link for granite). Be careful to not strip adjacent painted surfaces. Another poultice recipe if you think you have oil or oil-finish stains: paint stripper mixed with diatomaceous earth. Wear chemical resistant gloves and breath fresh air.
