NYC Dept of Finance charged me interest on a bill I didn't know existed.

We just found out FROM OUR MORTGAGER that we owe NYC Dept of Finance close to $2,000 in taxes. It turns out, after calling the NYC Dept. of Finance, that this amount is due to the previous owner of the house receiving a disability exemption / reduction. That’s fine – we knew she was receiving the exemption, and we were expecting to pay the difference (though we were told by our lawyer and the seller’s lawyer and our mortgager that the adjustment would take affect starting 2016, and that’s when we’d have to “pay up”…But nevermind that). My beef is NYC Dept of Finance has been charging us interest daily since the payment due date – over 2 months worth of interest! We have NEVER received a bill from them for this adjustment. The only reason we are aware is because our mortgager notified us. We called NYC Dept of Finance and they said there is nothing they can do to remove the interest. Who can I report this to and file a grievance with? Thanks.

the sad thing is, that by some of the comments here, this city just counts on people to pay this stuff and move along. they make a lot of money that way. I would even bet they have actuaries or some sort of math people figuring out at what point the populace will break and fight a smallish charge. I run into this stuff all the time with my business and even though it is wrong, I pay up as I do not have the time to fight it. we run into it in our house expenses as well. my mother would have fought this tooth and nail and i cannot even imagine what my grandparents would have done if they found errors like these – I mean to them, society would have been falling to bedlam. you are right to fight it. good luck. raise Cain. we pay them to work for us, not the other way around.

Naive I am, indeed! That’s why I’ve been using Brownstoner as a resource since I’m new to the whole homeowner thing. As someone who is always on top of my bills, I have been logging on to view our property bills. I guess i’m frustrated I didn’t know better that when the statements say we owe $0.00, it is not necessarily the case. But i’ll tap of out of this ring now and move on with the SOL advice 🙂

You are likely SOL (Sh*T Out of Luck) as my mother used to say. If you pay escrow to your mortgage company, they probably get RE Tax and other bills for the property. They were likely notified of the amount due but didn’t notify you in a timely manner. Regardless, as one of the other posters noted, you are required to be up to date on all of the taxes and charges related to your property. If you have a beef, it would seem to be with your mortgage processor who failed to inform you (or pay the bill). As an aside, it doesn’t seem to make logical sense to assume that an exemption would continue beyond the ownership of the person who is entitled to the exemption. Once you took over the house, you were responsible for the taxes and the exemption ended, too.

The statement clearly says “if you still have a mortgage…pay $0.00 We have had a mortgage since we purchased the house. Our bank collects $ from us to put in an escrow account to pay our property taxes. Is the statement not incredibly confusing?

$80\. It’s a lot to me. And I can’t be the only one who this has happened to. I’m not saying it will be resolved by little ‘ol me filing a grievance, but that’s exactly how problems DON’T get fixed – nobody speaks up. It’s a start at least.
