Who pays for a sinkhole in the street?
Over the weekend a sinkhole emerged in the street about 10 feet from the curb in front of my house. Who is on the hook to pay for that? Thanks

I’m curious, what causes these sink holes typically? Over the past couple of weeks, several of them have popped up repeatedly in the street at the intersection of 5th Ave and 18th St. Last year, all sorts of work was done in the street and it was dug up, then replaced. After repair last year, everything looked so nice with the new blacktop. Now, the street seems to be getting super-sized craters seemingly overnight. Could the prior repair after digging have been shoddy? Or is this typical?

I think if the hole was caused by a water or sewer line connected between the house and the main, the owner of the house would be liable. That is, unless you can prove that the city did something to cause this. I don’t any idea who would be liable if it were a natural occurrence.

Not entirely sure, but I think that 10 feet is the dividing line–within 10 feet of the curb you get the bill and beyond 10 feet the city pays the tab.
