Major Sidewalk Spalling

Hi, I had a new sidewalk and patio put in three summers ago, and it’s suffering from major spalling. Basically, everywhere I’ve put rock salt, chloride, or any deicer (even the pet friendly stuff) is flaking away. I’d say about half the total surface is gone at this point. And in the spots where I needed to deice the most, I’m down deep into the aggregate. The good news – I bought a pressure washer, and it appears the aggregate is holding. So I’m hoping everything can just be resurfaced. I’ve heard there’s some sort of concrete scraper that will take off the top 1/4 inch or so down to the aggregate in order to level everything out for a smooth repair. Is this true? What other options do I have besides ripping everything up and starting over?

I guess you’ve leave by now that salt, and even the pet – friendly de-icer, shouldn’t be used on new concrete for the first year. I hope I’m wrong, but I think the only listing repair would be to repair up the damned concrete and replace it. BTW, cat litter does a pretty good job of preventing slips on ice, although it makes an awful mess; that’s what I used on new concrete in my areaway last winter. I hope I can get away with magnesium chloride this year.
