bluestone & cement contractor

After a lot of searching I found an honest, relatively inexpensive bluestone sidewalk contractor. His cost was a quarter of the high bid. The violation is now resolved and the work seems well worth the price, with good communication throughout, necessary as I wanted to preserve as much bluestone as I could and use tinted cement where absolutely necessary. As today there are less projects out there, and cost of doing business is rising , as well as cost of materials, to make ends meet and survive in this economy dictates higher prices. As well cost of underestimating job is a buisiness going under. Being a good tradesman doeas not make one a good businessman. Trying to get cheapest contractor might backfire.

We try to bid to at least five contractors and have found that one firm is usually very low ball and another way high. The remaining three usually tend to fall into a pretty close low middle range. The low ball usually seems to be the type of firm operating out of the trunk of their car, the high only interested if paid a super premium.

Or the high bidder pays his guys living wages, offers insurance or % of, has a A rated insurance carrier with a minimum 3Mil coverage. Problem is most contaractors these days worke from home, have sub par insurance and pay off the books and use day labor.

How did his bid compare to the other bids? He could higher than the other bidders.  It seems that when you get several bids, there is always one that is outrageously high. That high bidder  either is trying to rip you off, is doing something different than the other bidders, or really doesn’t want the job. In selecting a contractor you need to compare the prices from several contractors.
