Steam shower with tub

I am researching renovation options for a bathroom with a premolded shower stall / bath tub / steam combo. The existing steam unit is in good shape and is located above the bathroom in a crawl space the prefab shower unit is all beat up from years of use. I would like to reuse the unit and either install a replacement modular stall or build a custom bath / shower / door combo. I would appreciate advice on capable contractors that could perform this work as well as the merits of custom vs modular. Thanks I advance

To get the full effect of the steam shower, the shower or bath enclosure must be sealed. But that creates other issues — once you are done (using the steam/bath/shower) you need a way let water evoporate and avoid mold. We forgot about that and now have to keep the shower door (its a single door, not sliding glass) open after any use until everything dries out. In a small bathroom that is awkward. I have seen small tilting glass above the shower door — kind of a transom window — that allows ventilation but can be closed when using the steam. I don’t know if this is relevant to the design you had in mind, but it is something to be considered.

In addition to the prefab option, your research will turn up two methods.  A traditional pan system with a two stage drain and a membrane system with direct drainage.  Both are custom tiled shower stalls and are used with steam.  There are varriations on both, but these two methods are quite different.  I use a membrane system.  I understand you are seeking recommendations and advice from home owners, not contractors, but if you do not hear about membrane systems from this forum or your neighbors report unsatisfactory results from pan systems.  You can find me in the Brownstoner directory under Shower Stalls. – Green Mountain
