Moving a modular wooden roof deck for re-roofing job

Hi all. My co-op in Prospect Heights needs a new roof. The problem is that we also have a heavy wooden roof deck covering about a third of the roof that needs to be moved before we start the work. It’s theoretically a modular structure—there are six individual sections—but each section probably weighs between 500 and 900 pounds. It might be possible to flip the sections on their sides and wheel them on a dolly to the other side of the bulkhead while the roofers re-roof those sections, but this seems dangerous and difficult. Another option might be to remove the surface boards to lighten the structure and try this same thing (or at least move them enough to make room for the roofers to work in those areas.

Any advice on this? We can’t for the life of us figure out why the people who built the deck would make such an unwieldy structure. How do people handle re-roofing with roof decks in general? Any advice on a contractor or a team who might regularly handle problems like this? We want to do everything we can to avoid having to scrap the deck. MANY THANKS! —Robert

“ThereAreGoats”-Roofing companies usually cover this phase. There are high tech roofing rubber liquids now that are spread on creating self-leveling surfaces evenly versus 4ml thick bitumin membranes being 42″ wide rolls applied using cold press adhesives or sometimes a butane tank(not NYFD approved) with a torch to melt the rolls seam over seam to bond. Thus alternatively, it makes sense that when using the liquid rubber application your deck flooring only needs to be removed for exposure to the roof and infrastructure underneath.. As for you questioning your deck-build, I would advise you to consider the severity of the pitch of your roof requiring a structure to be one that leveled-out, that was strong enough to carry railings, and that was elevated to allow roof drainage flow-off ? You might have considered store bought 24″x 30″ modules which work on flat roofs and added your railings to your parapet walls? Would’ not an execution by contractors have included a proposal representing everything? – all things considered , your calling your deck structure an “unwieldy” build is pretty much an uneducated remark and if I were you., I would research roofing companies that “cover everything” needed for getting under a deck to waterproof a roof.
