Clearing snow from roof

I am wondering if/how my building can address the large amount of snow on the roof, to avoid leaking or any other snow/water-related damage. Any suggestions? (Also, We tried going up to the roof deck, but the door won’t open – there’s about a foot of ice/snow blocking it opening. Any suggestions for that?)

Once the snow is gone, I suggest looking into heated wires for the roof. I read about them on this forum years ago and had one run along our gutter (brownstone roof that is very mildly sloped to the back of the house. There is a switch inside the house and when there is frozen stuff falling form the sky, I turn it on. The wire warms and the snow/ice near it slowly melts and goes down the gutter. This seems to prevent freezing inside the gutter pipe and we get fewer large chunks falling off the roof. I’m not sure how our roof looks after all of this, but at least the back ledge part doesn’t have heavy wet snow/ice sitting on it and the gutter pipe should stay clear to let melting snow go to the waste line, instead of down the back of the house. I agree with others to be careful with a shovel. You don’t want to create cracks that let the melting snow slowly seep into the building.

it all depends on how you clear/clean the roof, there are many ways to clear/clean a roof with out a shovel. if you know what you are doing then i would say clear/clean it.

Unless you have a faulty roof there is no need to clear the roof. More danger of damaging the membrane with a shovel. Leave it alone.
