Living Near Highway

Anyone live in a building near the BQE or any other of the highways and have any health concerns or tips for dealing with potential pollution. There are a lot of conflicting studies out there about health risks. It seems like there are a fair amount of new buildings done or going up near the BQE (Hicks St. and in the waterfront park) and would love to hear anyone’s experiences. Thanks

Been there 40 years. Bear in mind that sound transmission is line of sight. This means directly abutting “trench”, first floor would be much quieter than top floor, due to the steep walls of the trench blocking sound transmission. Regarding airborne pollution, this is a double edged sword. although there can be at times additional vehicle exhaust, you are also adjacent to a very large mass of air (over the water of the harbor) that is amazingly clean. SO at Atlantic Yards, you are surrounded in every direction with dense traffic and heating exhausts, so the breeze that takes away your locally produced pollution often brings similar pollution from adjacent streets. Not so along Columbia St neighborhood, that is blessed with a breeze off the water a lot of the time.

Yes, that pollution and noise comes from the highway and any other major road is no surprise here. Was just interested in hearing other peoples thoughts/concerns on the issue because 1) maybe they know more than me and 2) to get a sense of other peoples willingness to buy near these known issues. For instance the City a few years ago put out a study that said pretty much all of Manhattan the same air quality levels of air pollution as living alongside the BQE. thanks

Uh? No late-breaking news or surprises here. Pollution (air quality and noise) come with the BQE…something you knew or should have known before moving there…Ribert Moses is still dead so can’t sue him…
