Cypress Hills

Hi everyone.

As my handle suggests, we are former Bed Stuy residents and just bought in Cypress Hills.

If you are looking to buy and have a budget of under $1M this is a great place to look but a few suggestions.

20 minutes away from the new 170,000sf Netflix facility in Bushwick so this place will blow up as a result of the adjacency.

We bought between Fulton and Jamaica so we are walking distance to the park which has tennis, walking trails and baseball fields. It is very family and dog friendly.

There are plenty of places with garages if you look hard enough and time is limited to find something like this for under $1M. Street parking can be challenging if you come home late…not gonna lie.

If you travel a lot for work, the neighborhood is centrally located to LGA and JFK with both being about 15 minutes away.

The produce around here is amazing and you can get fresh coconut water right from the fruit for next to nothing.

You’ll definitely brush up on your Spanish.

There is a FB group but I think it’s mainly people who used to live here in the 1950s and 60s who moved to FL. Next door is a crap show that we tend to avoid.

Most of our collective info on great spots in neighborhood comes from each other when we meet up. A bunch of us, a mix of people from those who have lived here for 20+ years to those who have loved here for two months, socialize a lot and either go out for food or have potlucks, or BBQ in our yards.

oh, cool thanks – I do know that fruit place. There’s a pretty large fruit vendor near the entrance to the Jackie Robinson I keep meaning to check out but it’s kind of… up a big hill haha. I will psych myself up to do it before it gets too cold I swear. Is there a Cypress Hills FB group or anything like that? Is nextdoor the move for neighborhood recs and news?

It seems like an extreme statement to say that one business, particularly one that’s around 10 subway stops and a transfer away from the area in question, will cause prices to balloon there. Also, if prices do increase rapidly, there is risk the area’s charming homes will be torn down to make way for luxury rental and condo towers.

Thanks for the positive responses. I’ll ignore the glib one who doesn’t understand adjacencies to pricier neighborhoods to those who don’t have pricier neighborhood budgets when buying but anyhoo.

Our favorite fruit and veggie place is on the corner of Euclid and Ridgewood but would love some other suggestions of course.

We watched the mural go up on Pine and Fulton as that’s our subway station and we very much look forward to joining an event at the gallery as it’s a 90-second walk from our home.

If anyone has any other neighborhood pointers, highlights or suggestions, we’re all ears and we look forward to meeting others in the neighborhood but it’s already been a wonderful welcome.

Right ladybug. we live in a zip code limited to single family homes and two or three story two or three family homes. Mostly single family. The lack of big apartment buildings means we do not have the kind of younger, spontaneous and single population that might draw a lot of restaurants. For us, it is a minus. One of the oldest bars in nyc is in woodhaven. Last year we walked to it. Even that has to survive by plastering every wall with a tv screen which me thinks might not happen with a customer base that really wants to go out and socialize as opposed to siiting and drinking while staring at the wall or into a glass.

A lot of what happens on commercial corridors comes down to disposable income and population density. Cypress Hills has a lot of low density housing for now and not the highest AMI but the neighbors are chill, park is nice and it’s really easy to get to nearby areas with more diverse retail and dining options. Also, lots of bars and restaurants in the area can increase the rat problems and I’m happy to avoid that.

So i wanted to say something like this : if more like minded people moved into cypress and woodhaven, there can be a nice commercial strip on jamaica ave with restaurants and cafes. It won’t happen. Those elevated train lines are not condusive to higher rents and people sipping a glass of wine or tea. Its a shame. Some nice houses albeit smaller. Also wood frame, not sure how that goes. But they have a supermarket in cypress hills; woodhaven has a great library and forest park. A golf course for those people. And the woman who wrote “a tree grows in brooklyn” lived in woodhaven, across from the library.

So much potential.

My impression is that Cypress Hills and Woodhaven are becoming more known to people whose center of gravity is Bushwick and Williamsburg versus Manhattan. I work in the arts with most of my work being in or near Bushwick and I have several colleagues who are moving further out on the J train as far as Woodhaven Blvd. This is anecdotal, of course but definitely seems likely to continue.

I’ve often wondered why Cypress Hills doesn’t get more attention. I suppose articles about high crime rates, like the one in the Times Metropolitan section yesterday have something to do with it, but I suspect that this is distorted since the neighborhood shares a precinct with East New York.
My neighborhood, PLG, was similarly disparaged because our crime statistics were skewed by what happened in the eastern end of our precinct, miles away. That’s what lead me to become an active poster here in the early 2000s. Anyway,’ as a long-time PLG booster, posts like this warm my heart.

We bought a super cute house in Cypress Hills a few months ago but it needs to be renovated so we likely won’t move in until late next year. So far it’s been great, our next door neighbor is extremely kind and watches the house because he knows we’re not there full time yet. Where are the good fruit places? Street vendors?

Oh and don’t forget we’re also 20 minutes from the Rockaways beaches and 20 minutes from Elmhurst and its amazing food choices, among other things. Bushwick and ridgewood are only 10-15 minutes away. We’ve been called the Bushwick Suburbs and it fits.

Welcome to to neighborhood! We’ve been here 8 years after living in nyc for 25 years and we’ve never understood why this neighborhood is as little known as it is.

Half hour to Manhattan on train, the most amazing park and ridgewood reservoir five minutes from your house, same level of safety as way more expensive neighborhoods – I just don’t get it. We are in planning stages for a dog run btw downstairs at Highland Park.

Be sure to look up our gallery www.nortemaar.org on Pine near the Crescent stop – we have a great exhibit up now and will have closing party- many neighbors come and it’s really relaxed and friendly.

Norte Maar is also behind the giant mural going up now near the handball courts at the park and two others at Mellor’s drug store and at Pine and Fulton.

I’m also on the board of the Forest (and Highland) Park Trust. So basically a neighborhood cheerleader.
