Moving to New York

Hi eveyone, we currently live in a city just north of Los Angeles (Santa Clarita) and have to move to New York by June.  Obviously as we have only been a tourist in NYC we have questions!!! We are considering Brooklyn – but which areas should we NOT consider and which areas should we consider? Which is the better way: use a rental broker or look for a direct lease apartment? And I don’t mind getting answers from agents or brokers!!!!

Thanks for all the answers.  I am currently on the ACN Mon/Thu schedule so that was a very good suggestion.  Price point is around $2000\.  We have heard that Bed-Stuy is a place not to go – any comments?  Any places in Brooklyn to stay away from?  We need a rental in a safe as possible area as I will be travelling during the week; another main requirement is proximity to parks for the dogs; would prefer a townhouse or brownstone or a lowrise but do want to stay away from a highrise; would like to be in a gentrifed or becoming gentrified residential area.

i agree with broklein, and if ACN has you on the Mon-Thurs schedule you wont be doing the daily commute as often as the wife/kid.

why not start with areas near, or easily commutable to, the university…that covers two of the three of you.  Your workplace is central and can be gotten to from anywhere.

if you are looking in the city, you will not have to go anywhere near ninety minutes commute.  forty five to sixty minutes on the subway will get you to work from almost anywhere in the five boroughs.  If you are willing to do ninety, you sound like you are considering areas outside the city.  all of which have train options, be it westchester, long island, or new jersey. the dogs are your biggest challenge…not impossible, but will largely determine what you can rent.  still not enough info to advise on areas. the location of the university matters for commute, too, I would think.  gonna depend on what sort of neighbood feel you like, low rise or high, commercial or residential, gentrified or gentrifying or doing neither yet, whether you want good restaurants and shops nearby, how much space you want, how renovated it needs to be, etc. good luck.

OK – more details:
Both my wife and daughter will be attending college (one of the public universities in NY – not a private college); I am an IT consultant and need to be within 90 minutes of the Manhatten office (1345 Ave of the Americas) so we need access to public transport (I am NOT driving in NYC).  AND we have 2 small dogs which are house trained (they know to ask to go out if they need too and they are happy to be crated when we are not home) and are properly socialised (like people and get on well with other dogs).  Because of the dogs we would prefer a brownstone or a condo to a highrise.

Hmm, that is a hard question to answer since Brooklyn is a borough/county of 2 million people.  Perhaps you could share more about yourself and what your hope/concerns are.  Obviously a 24 year old with her first job will have a different set of criteria than a 45 year old with three kids and a wish to live within 30 minutes of 14th street.
