South area of Bed Stuy - changing? Safe for family?

We are looking to purchase a brownstone in Crown Heights but just came across something interesting right across Atlantic in Bed Stuy by Herkimer and Nostrand.  We have not done much research on this area yet and trying to figure out if this area of Bed Stuy is changing and is safe for a family with two young children.  it is very commercial with Atlantic, and shops on Fulton Nostrand right around the block and I am wondering if this deters people from buying in the area also..Looking around it seems like more central or northern areas of Bed Stuy are becoming more popular, but we really want to be on the other side of Atlantic, but this could be close enough.  Any advice is much appreciated!!

I walk down Herkimer all the time from the LIRR stop at Nostrand.  I think the NYTimes featured that block once – and the Ontario apartment building.  Given the size of the buildings (some large apartment buildings), the community will stay pretty stable for a while.  Not sure what they are doing in what looks like an old school building – renovated with plate glass.  Always loved the moorish temple.

That is a nice area where you are looking.  We are quite a bit further east, a few blocks east of Malcom X.  Been here for only 8 months, but really love our block and the surrounding area.  Friendly, helpful neighbors, a real sense of community on the block where people look out for one another.  No issues with feeling unsafe and we have to young kids as well.  As I have said to others, safety is subjective, you just need to be smart as you can find trouble wherever you live.

After living in North Slope for 20 years I moved to Bedstuy 9 months ago. People are very relaxed and friendly here. I love this neighborhood.

We just moved to South Bedstuy and love it! Great neighborhood and community and definitely feels safe. I agree Fulton is ugly but the area is changing so fast there are new shops, bars and restaurants opening all the time.

Check it out at various hours of the day….and make a determination. The houses on that block have nice bones but seemed really worn out. That said, probably some good deals to be had…no risk, no reward.

I had heard a rumor or read something a couple of years ago that one of the very large investment houses was buying a lot of real estate over there.  it had me thinking that something was going to happen.  I don’t like to contribute to rumors, so forgive me if I am wrong.  I may have even read it on here.   As far as businesses, they draw people and people deter crime.  that is what a NYC police officer told me once.  I even think the right kind of nightlife in an area lends to safety.

I dont know about safety there  but I do think you’re right that the ugliness of Atlantic and Fulton keeps people from buying there. Also as far as I’ve seen there aren’t the kind of yuppie businesses right there which are drawing people to other parts of Bed-Stuy. The highest prices right now are for places on the border of Clinton Hill or in what’s called Stuy Heights.
