Radiator recommendation?

Hi all, we’re looking to add radiators back into our apartment. They were originally removed by the previous owners (too warm) so the hookups are there (single pipe). I’m thinking of avoiding the old huge cast iron ones. Any reccos on slightly more modern less protruding ones and where to get them? We have a mix of small and large rooms….should we go big cast iron in large rooms, and new low profile in small rooms? I’d think the big cast iron guys radiate more heat than new low-profile versions. Any help appreciated!

It’s a 2-pipe vacuum system. You got it.

John, is this 17 story building one pipe steam system on outdoor reset or 2 pipe Vari Vac system? This will make a big difference. Anyway, I personally would be very careful with steam.

You can make them work with some careful planning. Is that fair to say, Gennady? I’m in the process of installing 74 of these steel radiators on two stories of a 17-story building that is heated with cast iron. That’s because after I replaced the cast iron radiators in two conference rooms with the steel (four radiators total), the client liked it so much they want the entirety of their two floors converted. It’s not copper and it’s not fin-tube. The mass and convection are closer to cast iron than those. I prefer to choose these applications on a case by case.

Steel radiators might work only when all radiators in the building are steel ones and reset cycle is set to 30 minutes, or in case of residential house with thermostat (no outdoor reset control) and also all radiators are same type. These cannot be mixed with cast iron ones. Cast iron radiators are serving as a heat storage (accumulators). because of the way steam reset controls work. They are charged during boiler active part of the heating cycle and discharge heat during passive part of the heating cycle. Steel radiator’s ability to store heat is much less than cast iron ones.

You don’t have a lot of options with steam, especially if it’s a 1-pipe system www.steamradiators.com
