Installing a radiator -- Plumber advice?
I want to install a radiator in the kitchen which is on the 3rd floor of my home. I’ve had two plumbers over to give me estimates. One said to connect to the radiator plumbing on the 2nd floor that sits just beneath it (I think he said with a Y connection?). Another plumber said I better run the line from the basement or I risk a water overflo which could damage the walls (Im renovating so someday they’ll be nicely painted). I called the first plumber back and he said that there’s no risk of an overflow problem if the plumbing is done right. Not sure if this helps but the plumbing is all old, in fact everything in the house is super old. It was build in 1922 and not much has really been updated. Anyone have advice on who’s right?

It depends on the diameter of the pipe and the size of the radiators. Steam will condense in each radiator and become water. That water will have to drain back to the boiler within the same pipe and against the pressure of the steam moving against it in the opposite direction. It gets tricky and while it may work, it doesn’t always. The one who’s right is the one who’s informed.

Here we go again. Why plumber? Maybe steamfitter? Ability to install water closet does not qualify one to install heating radiator.

I had a steam radiator installed in the 3rd floor feeding of the riser to a 2nd floor adiator with no problems. It was a straight run to the 3rd floor.
