subway vibrations

We recently moved into the top floor of a brownstone a couple of blocks from a subway station. After being here for a few weeks we’ve noticed what we assume is the vibrations from the subway and we seem to be feeling it more and more every day.  We visited the apt several times before moving in and never noticed it.  Has anyone had similar experience?

If you are a few blocks from where the subway tunnel actually runs, it could be something other than the subway…if something else, it may not be permanent.  You will either get used to it, as many get used to such things, or you never will, in which case you will move on.  I find that what one can learn to live with or ignore varies from person to person.  I find vibrations much harder to live with than sounds.

Thanks for the responses.  Bob, the apt is near Carroll St station so it’s a ways from Smith and 9th St but I’m hoping that somehow the work being done there is a factor so that once it’s completed the situation will get better but I have a feeling that’s wishful thinking.

I’m in your shoes also. I bought a place last year that’s half a block from where the train runs underground. I never noticed before i moved in, only until after. Mostly these days I don’t really notice it, only sometimes. Though I will say that if you’re over an area that has carpeted flooring, you are less likely to feel the vibrations versus a hard floor which transmits it easier.

Just wait, you won’t notice the sounds of the subway after a few weeks. I have lived over the subway for 10 years and sleep on the top floor. We are not bothered by the sounds at all.

that’s called living and learning.  people have bought houses that the later didn’t realize was right over the rumble of a subway.  so, i guess a one year lease is a lesson you won’t forget.  crime, schools, elevation, water table, methodone clinics, neighbor who hears voices and goes off his meds frequently….and subway rumble.  sometimes there are things you never think of in your due diligence, that is why you ALWAYS want to talk to a neighbor.      good luck, you probably won’t even notice it after a month.

The good news is that the  house has been there since the subway was built, so it probably won’t collapse from the vibrations. The bad news is that you probably can’t do much about it, other than using something like “Fun Tac” to keep pictures level on the walls and stabilize breakable items.   Is the building somewhere along 9th Street, where the F train runs?
