Skateboarders on Putnam

Hi I am wondering if anyone else is bothered by the skateboarders on Putnam Avenue. 144 Putnam transformed its back yard into a skate board park and the noise right now is unbearable. They’re having a huge party with a dj and cheering and very loud music.  The noise from the 10′ skateboard ramp can be heard every single evening until late at night and the parties are becoming more frequent. Anyone have an idea as to how to deal with this? It goes way beyond live and let live and calling 311 dozens of times did nothing last spring and summer.  Thanks

I am sure this is hilarious from a distance, but if it was your block it wouldn’t be so funny. The skate boarders get to go home and sleep at their mother’s house all day. Some of us have lives that start in the morning.

Kids having too much fun playing a sport in a backyard on a skateramp they were industrious enough to build. Sounds annoying esp. if you are trying to sleep, but also sounds like there’s a lot of positive stuff going on with these kids. I can’t tell from the above but it sounds like everyone is talking about 311 and the buildings dept– not the actual police? Just call the precinct. They can’t make that much noise at night and the police will eventually show up and break up the party. If people are already calling the precinct, and if the police are really that negligent in the precinct, then it sounds lucky that you are just dealing with skateboard parties.

My brownstone is back-to-back with 144 Putnam Ave (i.e. I look out onto their ramp). Usually, the sound of the skateboarding doesn’t bother me. Most weekday nights they stop pretty religiously around 10pm and don’t play music. However, this Saturday was a different story. The music was so loud it could be heard throughout the entire neighborhood. I went over to talk to them and they were not responsive. I said I’d have to call the cops if it didn’t stop. They just shrugged their shoulders and said “whatever.” Honestly those kids looked so young to me that when I called 311, I called to report loud music AND underage drinking. My hopes were that the underage drinking would spark the cops to respond faster. Alas, my attempt to get help from 311 yielded nothing.

are they charging to use the skate ramp?  unliscensed business.  Is it made of combustable material?  Fire hazzard.  Is it three feet from the property line?  get a skateboard and attend the party.  take a fall and file a law suit?

It still is a felony. This isn’t 1980s Brooklyn… The point is that creative problems require creative solutions. Next time they have a loud party, call the fire department. Do these folks have a place of assembly permit for the crowd? Probably not. Does the number of attendees exceed the lawful occupancy number for the space? Are they selling alcohol? Do they have a permit? You can quickly become their nuisance. A little organization with your neighbors goes a long way.

There were three complaints filed with the buidling department last year, and each time no one was able to gain access.  Do you know anyone else in the building, or anyone in the adjacent properties?  Unless the inspectors can see it they can’t compel any action. 

[Back when I was a kid in Brooklyn, the off-the-books solution would involve molotov cocktails or other incendiary devices.  More than one quarter-pipe or half-pipe was set on fire back then… just sayin’ 🙂 ]

Have you tried talking to your neighbors? I mean like knocking on the door and talking to them? It’s way more effective than 311\.
