steve, you said police protests “had nothing to do with the mayor” and cops are bullies. Unfortunately, the mayor was directly responsible for Eric Garner with his broken windows policy that was (pervertedly) supposed to counteract the loss of stop and frisk (a practice which he strongly opposed). The policy was not liked by police – but Bratton implemented it and the rest is history. Now another brilliant move by the mayor setting police policy by an amateur is upon us. ‘ I agree with you on the Pre-K, but for me it seems all he is good at doing thus far is is spending money. I don’t necessarily consider that skillful, as anyone can overspend. A politician that spends to gain popularity through social programs almost universally ends up putting his constituents’ government in heavy debt.

and when he was rolling the pre k out I remember thinking too bad we had to pay for ours. then I thought, “would I really have wanted to send someone I love to one of his pre k’s?” probably not. and someone can chime in here and say that we were lucky we could pay for it – but I had to work quite hard to be able to.

Pigthree: I felt he was vilifying the drivers as well – and I did not like it as I drive (and hate having to – it is for work) and am very aware that the pedestrians crossing when they shouldn’t are a big part of the problem. A cop once told me that when a pedestrian gets hit, it is usually the fault of the pedestrian. Now, more recently I have seen references being made in the press to the mayor’s pressure on the police to ticket pedestrians. I just want the guy to be fair and look at where the problems really come from.

btw, that method of issuing speeding tickets sounds like an end around of what was approved by Albany that will eventually be challenged in court. Billy with another page out of the Barack play book.

Universal pre-k is good in theory. Billy’s roll out was a disaster much like the ACA. Money going to little private daycare facilities that were not inspected with employee’s that were not properly vetted. Pre-k is one thing. Paid child care is another. Vision zero is a good idea. But all I have seen is the mayor vilifying drivers. The same drivers that provide massive amounts of revenue for NYC. I’m not including the parking ticket revenue in that massive figure. I am happy when I can go 25! Most days its 15 to 20 about town. Most drivers obey the laws. Easily more than pedestrians and cyclists. He has taken notable action against drivers. Lots of tax dollars on bus adds making all drivers seem negligent. When and what is he going to do to start enforcing laws against negligent pedestrians and cyclists? If I hit and kill a pedestrian or cyclists while following all traffic laws, why should I have to live with that pain? You would be surprised how often those types of accidents almost happen (not with me, in general)

and now another thing. I just took a walk to the bank which is by a school and saw a woman in a NYC car with yellow flashing lights, a camera and some what I learned were radar things. I stopped to ask what the program was (I thought they were monitoring pedestrian/car traffic through the intersection as we have complained to DOT and the police about some of the recklessness directed at pedestrians). The first thing out of the woman’s mouth was “have you heard of the Mayor’s Vision Zero?” I told her I had and she told me that she was issuing automated camera speeding violations to speeders. who reading this has ever almost been injured by a speeder? I have lived here for 20 years and in the last year have almost been run over by three cars in the intersection by my house while walking my son to school by people failing to yield and driving recklessly. I have never almost been hit by a speeder whilst a pedestrian. I was hit by a car in 2000 by a man making a turn (failed to yield) and he was not speeding. I have attempted to call the mayor’s office about this, i have called DOT (they are studying one of the intersections), I have called the police and fought with them to take a report, on and on inc to the community board and the school principal. and this mayor worries about speeders. he is too worried about going after what will raise money (sound like Bloomberg and the parking tickets?) and too worried about not offending people or tackling the reckless drivers (which will cost money as it must be witnessed). the guy is trying to make his mark the wrong way. and some of what he sees as solutions strike me as odd; I work in all neighborhoods in this city and I cross the same intersections he does, is his head someplace that it should not be that he is not seeing the same things I am? when he does some of these things he strikes me as out of touch as some fat, cigar smoking guy sitting in a board room on a fortune 500 company.

I am glad this conversation started here as really, in the nabe I am, I cannot bring up politics. a good many of my neighbors judge people based on the color of their skin and vote and rate the person’s entire character accordingly. I keep my mouth shut. And people weighed in with out getting criticized for saying good things about the mayor; the pre k is a win-win for everyone and high school grad rates for kids who attended pre k have proven that. we all want youth around us who are going somewhere. and the police protests had to happen and had nothing to do with the mayor (the police are bullies and I get pulled over several times a year during work and am very aware that if I am dealing with a white 40 plus year old cop, I have to keep my mouth shut and not question them, even politely, even if I should be asking, as THEY will escalate and THEY have fragile egos; the younger guys and the cops with darker skin than mine are nicer; they can joke around a little to relax people). also, I did not move here until 1995\. I knew the city had been bad before that as I grew up 50 miles from here. but having people mention the 1980’s city and that possibly some of the people who voted for the mayor were not here then makes sense. we will see what happens.

Seems to me many of the people who voted for DeB were those who did not live in NYC in the 80s, when the city was unsafe, running rampant with squeegee guys, junkies, crackheads…etc. NYC was a dump. Fast forward to Giuliani & Bloomberg; Bratton & Kelly. Regardless of their politics, the city was cleaned up, and here we all are talking about our million dollar homes, our kids take the subways to school and social events, and we are having dinner in Bushwick, Harlem and other areas which would have been considered insane to step foot in at one time. Unfortunately,the new Masters of the Universe believe NYC is a safe little bubble, and voted DeB in. My fellow Park Slopers, you are now getting screwed with the dense building in your community. Fellow NYers who continue to live in high crime areas and blight, the NYPD no longer can protect you out of fear of being demonized/unsupported by this mayor. So there you have it. I have said this many times: I have never voted for DeB for any political seat he ran for. He has been a sell out to Brooklyn for years, and now is selling out the city. I love my city, and am amazed how this guy has been able to turn back time 30 years ago in such a short time. Three more years of this is a disaster.

Sorry, one more interesting Deblasio policy change that no one wants to discuss is when they ended stop and frisk, they started stationing officers in patrol cars in high crime areas to just sit, sometimes with their light flashing for no good reason. I had an exchange about it’s effectiveness with officer Wenjian Liu one hot afternoon while stopped at a red light. We seemed to agree is was not the smartest use of his/their time. We now know what happened to officers Liu and Ramos. This policy was not in use prior to Deblasio.

Putnam, Enforcing laws should be blind to age, gender, race, sexual preference, creed and/or religion. …oh, and political belief (there are more that two) Targeting a specific age is really that far from targeting a specific race of statistical law breakers?

Just a little info on “who” elected DeBlasiso. 750K out of a city of 8.5 million. Only 1 million voted in the last mayoral election.

Putnam… prior to reading the article, I was not aware the mayor could order the police to actually not make arrests and I assumed the police were arresting who they want including people for low level drug offences (a joint or two) to up their numbers. they could have stopped a lot of this and a lot of the hatred in many communities (Bloomberg should have stopped it before it got this far) by not arresting kids for something that ALL kids do. but they are looking for guns, find pot, and arrest them. Pot smokers are not violent. instead of altering the tactics, they scrapped the policy. Shame on the city for criminalizing thousands of otherwise good kids and the judges and prosecutors should have seen this coming and tossed these cases; we have to remember, the police are police and they are not paid to be smart. I did go read the article last night and your clarification really helps us to understand the strategy and I HOPE it works. but it seems everything this guys wants to do runs counter to what common sense would say. I mean even having the personal assistant for his wife who was dating a convicted murderer and felon; I have a family and as a rule I do not talk to convicted felons and will not bring them into the presence of my son. (I had one here buying tools from me and he wanted to come back and when I found out who he was he was not invited; this is not about race, he was white this is about common sense). I am sorry, but as a taxpayer, I do not want paid city employees consorting with felons. take the race issues out of it and we still have to draw lines in the sand about what is acceptable and what is not. I am glad the OP put the article up there. It is too bad the ny post had to be the one to inform us.

I am glad I got some people to open up here a little. I mean, i think some of my customers are “liberal” and I do share common political values with them. but I am starting to worry about this city with this mayor. I am starting to worry about the safety of my family. they could have ordered the police to continue stop and frisk while applying it to more whites to alleviate some issues with profiling and maybe had they stopped arresting kids for minor things that they found in their pockets (that MOST 18 year olds use) then we could have had a safe city. It is assinine for the police to arrest kids for some things anyway – what a better way to make a criminal out of an otherwise good kid. now gun violence goes up. Liberal should not have to mean we tolerate guns and violence. I will say it here: I voted for obama both times. this mayor is off the wall.

Starting such a discussion with a Post article (strike one) quoting disgruntle police officers (strike two) is going to lead down the rabbit hole. If I were to peel back the layers of bias, I might guess that criminologists and experienced criminal justice professionals believe (as I do after 20+ year practicing in the criminal courts as a lawyer), that most violent crime is committed by younger people. And that if you are managing a police department you might want your officers to focus on those most likely to commit violent crimes. To get those results you would create incentives, and as in this case, disincentives to achieve those results. When an officer makes an arrest, he or she disappears off the street to fill out paperwork, take the defendant to central booking, etc. One could imagine that a human being might prefer to arrest the least violent, most compliant suspects, rather than take on the more unpredictable, and more dangerous, younger people. So we end up with police officers complaining and misrepresenting the new direction to a sympathetic ear that is primed to attack the mayor. They seem to have found a ready audience here on this thread.

I think he’s getting mixed reviews but has bounced back from the police scandal. The split seems to be between the haves and have-nots. If you have, you’re having to take a hit a little bit as he’s seemingly trying to return the balance of the city a little bit so that it doesn’t collapse into in sustainability. If you aren’t white and middle class all those issue people protest against are real and it’s terrible. I’m a white progressive and I’m actually impressed with him–unlike Obama he’s largely been able to push through the agenda that got him elected. I truly believe universal pre-k will be a massive game-changer that in a decade will have radically improved the lives of literally millions. Bloomberg did a lot of good, but he also oversaw/created a lot of changes in the city that have been disastrous, mostly in terms of inequality and siphoning cash from the poor and middle class upwards. The homeless situation is real, the worst it’s been ever?worse than the great depression?and it’s families not the stereotype of drug addicts and so on. So yeah, not 100% of his moves are spot on, but he’s going what he promised and what got him elected.

I don’t know anyone who voted for DiBlasio, and I live and work among the super liberal. This administration is a travesty and I hope he doesn’t get re-elected.
