Macon St. Iron Gate "Removal"

I was out running this morning at around 0630 and noticed a white van parked outside a house in the 200-block of Macon St. There were two men operating from that van – as I was passing, one man was in the front of the van and the other man was carrying a gate from one of the houses and placing it in the side of the van.

My initial thought was that they were repairing the gate – it was broad daylight and they didn’t seem to be moving too fast. I thought it was suspicious, though, when I researched the topic and the guys and van fit the description of a couple of perps the police were looking for.

It was pleasant – the rest of my run back home – repeating the van’s tag number in my head to the beat of my feet on the pavement.

Anyhow, it might have been a handyman or it might not have – but a detective from the 79th Precinct has the info.

Keep an eye on your gates, fellow Bed-Stuy-ers…

Hi everyone –

Thanks for your pro-active help with this situation. I am expecting that the info that I sent the 81st was helpful in bringing these creeps in – but it was only because of your assistance in alerting the proper authorities, who were interested in obtaining and using this information, that anything got done.

If I learned anything from this, it is that for anything to get done, you have to call 911 and have an officer come out to the scene to collect an official report. Otherwise, it is like breaking rocks to get anyone to take a report.

I finally had the time to get into the precinct house. It took me a while to get through the explanation of everything I did to try and get this reported. And when I finally go t through to them what I witnessed, they asked a number of questions linked to why they could not take my report. Why didn’t the gate owner report this? Why didn’t I call 911? &c. Anyhow, they eventually wrote the information on the back of a scrap piece of paper. I gave them everything I recalled. They asked if I would go back to the address and try and get the owner to respond. I told them I was simply presenting them with information and if they chose to use it and wanted my assistance in the investigation, I would be more than happy to cooperate. They finally told me that they would have an officer stop by the address and look into whether the gate was stolen or out for repairs. They have my contact information. If I hear from them either way, I will let you know.

I contacted the precinct house, since they still had not returned my call. An officer in the detective section told me that they do not take reports over the phone. I told them that the detective took my report last week over the phone and that this detective told me that another detective would call me back shortly. He re-iterated that they do not take reports over the phone. He said I would have to come in to the precinct house in person to make a report.

These guys sure do make it tough for the average joe to report crimes, don’t they?

Anyhow, these guys are still out there and have had the last week to do what they do best, with no interruption from the police. I don’t know when I will have time to go in to the precinct house and do this – and I am not sure that it matters at this point. Will they really take it seriously?!?

“How do you secure your gate so this doesn’t happen?”

  I don’t know anything about the gates in question, or the current removal techniques.  But where I grew up this was an issue for some time (back when stealing a Cadillac bumper was prevalent).  Just as the city has started to weld sewer grates to prevent theft and long ago people welded their bumpers, 25+ years ago when this was a problem in my neigborhood people welded stops on top of the gate pins so it was rather difficult to remove.

How do you secure your gate so this doesn’t happen? I hate to put a heavy chain out there, but can’t imagine a more minimal cable will stop someone on a mission.

Your iron gates are making their way up the Taconic as well; to the many architectural salvage shops in Columbia / Dutchess Counties and NW Connecticut. There is a huge weekender community up there….think about it.

My neighbor’s gate was recently stolen about a block away.
