Life in Stuy Heights

My financee and I are looking at a condo near Putnam/Lewis. The apartment is gorgeous but we don’t know the area at all. I know there’s a great stretch of restaurants and maybe a couple of bars on Lewis, but what else is around? Coffee joints? Supermarkets? My sense is that it’s a nice, quiet neighborhood, but we need a little night life/street life. Any tales from that end of town?

The place on Lewis is Saraghina, a great local restaurant/pizza place/bakery. I think you need to walk the neighboorhood and decide if it’s for you. Walk around during the day, walk around at night. Walk around on a weekend. Driving doesn’t count! you have to do it on foot and then you’ll discover the gems.

Bed Stuy is pretty family oriented, though Bedford Avenue has a little bit of a night time scene, and more new bars and restaurants are in the works in that area, on Tompkins, and on Malcolm X. You may want to check out Bushwick and Crown Heights for more night life.

My wife and I are a couple blocks south and west of this. And yes, it’s a largely quiet, residential neighborhood. You’ve got the pockets of restaurants, which you seem to have found. And there is no shortage of coffee shops and other weekend morning hangouts. The number of both restaurants and coffee places seems to be on the rise. For late night stuff, I don’t really know of anything except for maybe a couple of places down on Fulton. And decent grocery stores? It’s a bit of a desert. The only clean, large place to shop for groceries is the Super Foodtown at Kingston. We buy staples at the local places but schlep to Whole Foods for the bulk of our needs.
