Five blocks for 3 days?

Am I the only person that finds it annoying that “Modern Love is shutting down five blocks for rpoduction for three days? What are we getting as residents for this inconvienence?

i am wondering, if stong community groups could limit the abuses that take place … lights, generators, night noise, etc.  I know the city supports such filming, but it only seems like a matter of time before community groups get organized to take back their streets somewhat.  Problem is, it takes a lot of work and time to accomplish such things.  I make a point of ignoring people who tell me I can not walk down the street.  the least they could do is ask nicely, which they never do.  the ones that bother me the most are when streets are closed for politicians and dignitaries, like when I worked in midtown and was for awhile on crutches … really made me feel for the more permanently disabled …because then the cops were keeping one from streets, and I could not ignore them.

we had a movie shoot around the corner from us for 3 weeks over the summer.  we got nothing, except trash, losers on our stoops, broken sidewalks and damaged trees, and a lot of attitude.  two houses were used; those residents may have gotten some compensation but they certainly didn’t share it.

We had Boardwalk Empire film on and around our block.  What a pain.  What we got?  Money for the block association, a bouncy thingy for the kids when we had our annual block party.  The churches hosted the film staff, they hung out in Breadstuy.  So I guess the community did benefit in a way.  What I didn’t like, besides the parking issue, was that I couldn’t find any mention of Boardwalk Empire filming in Bedstuy anywhere.  I saw other parts of Brooklyn mentioned, but not us.  They filmed the episodes for close to a year. This was the only year I wished for constant rain or snow.

bobmarvin, The fact that the signs are up hours and days _before_ the street is used and that sometimes the streets are _not even used_ is a huge part of the problem. And, curiousity, while you make some very valid points, I must respectfully disagree with two of your points (3 and 4). Yes, movie productions create lots of jobs for locals and provide tax revenue and benefits for businesses and the city – all great things. But: 1\. The donations to local non-profits are not consistent or customary; nor do they generally benefit the people who were impacted/inconvenienced by the production. 2\. Pride of living in the greatest city in the world is out the window when: – Elderly and disabled residents who drive cannot park near their homes for days at a time due to production  – Generators are left running and the exhaust goes directly into the homes of residents on the               street level – Residents are told fairly regularly that they cannot walk down the street to their homes “because   we are filming” – The cast and crew film late into the evening and the noise of the production and the bright lights    stream into your windows as you try to sleep. I promise I am not trying to be annoying either; but IMO people who think it is great that movies are filmed here, have never lived on a block where filming happens on a regular basis.

I promise I’m not trying to be annoying.  Here’s what residents get when productions happen in New York:   1.  Lots of jobs for locals 2.  Lots of business tax revenue 3.  Donations to local non profits–which I understand is customary for production companies to give after they wrap 4.  The pride of living in the greatest city in the world.  So great, in fact, everyone wants to film here.

I’m with you. In my neighborhood the film “Thank You For Sharing” (a dumb comedy about sex addicts in 12-step treatment) posted signs about shutting down five blocks for three days, starting last night (my block of Midwood Street, plus Bedford Avenue from Rutland–Lincoln). I turns out they only used one block (mine, unfortunately). IMO they don’t EVER belong on residential blocks, but it would help a little if they didn’t post about  using streets they don’t actually need!
