Turning small bathroom into a wet room...need advice

I did this about 18 years ago the old fashioned way:  Durock and tile with a floor drain.  It has never leaked or been a problem but I would recomment the newer technologies as described above.  I bet you could find a video of them on the This Old House website.

We use the same method as listed above.  A Brownstoner poster reached out to me last year to correct a faulty install of the same product in a shower (apparently the previous homeowner had performed the work).  I’ve used the product subsequently and also use the product for exterior waterproofing applications.  Correctly installed, it is the way to go.  If you want to spray water throughout the room, you will want to hire someone diligent about waterproofing.

I am in the Brownstoner directory under shower stalls.  I use a waterproof membrane and set the tile directly to it.  It is not a shower pan.  Not lead, not vinyl.  I have made exterior windows, in showers leak- proof.  I use it in tub surrounds, shower stalls, laundries, and as you describe “wet rooms.”  The membrane has a special compatible drain, which is also 100 % direct drainage, not like a “two stage” drain used with a pan system.  Of course, like a shower stall, if you block the drain, water will eventually overflow at the lowest points usually the toilet flange and threshold.  None of my clients have blocked their drains or had floods.  I seal or elevate low points according to conditions of each job.
