Hi all — We are looking for a licensed plumber to replace the mostly vertical main waste line and vent that runs from the cellar through the roof. (We may opt to replace part or most of the main waste line in the cellar also — and there is another vent on the other side of the house that could use some attention.) Is there a particular type of plumber who does this all day long, and specializes in this, and does anyone have a specific recommendation? Should I call plumbers who specialize in drains, or do they only do snaking and cleanouts? I hope they can do it in a day since the toilets will be non operational. Also, the heavy cast iron vertical vent line is supported only by the roof — it is not supported by wall braces. Thanks.

Mopar, Drain guys are more under street sewer connections. Larger outfits usually have a crew that spends most of their time doing waste lines. You might try going down and talking to Rocco in person (not on telephone)on Degraw St and Van Brunt at Plumbingworx. If you call on phone -you are retail. If you shlep there, trade price. You can mention Bruce from Kane St, but I haven’t needed him for a while. He also is reasonable for water mains. Waste lines should have floor clamps at each level to support weight. New no hub isn’t as heavy as old cast, but it still weighs plenty.

Make sure they use US made cast iron pipes, fittings and couplings. do not use chinese made staff, no matters what plumber say. make sure they will do 10′ test on piping as well , so you will not have leaks and smell after walls will be closed. Pay attention to vent support on the roof, if lenght will be over 7′ above roof.

Try David at DJ Plumbing…718-949-2000\.  I’ve used him for a couple jobs and he does good work at a reasonable price.  If you want, mention my name….Alex from 322\.  I actually talked to him about the possibility of adding an entire new line of bathrooms (ie an entire new stack) in my building.  There really isn’t anything complicated about it, but it is a big job.
