Radiator valve is TOO LOUD!

I think this is very easy problem as you told its very old so you should change the valve and its price is also not more .The valve expand and contracts according to the surrounding temperature, thereby allow and disallow flow. When the temperature rise , the valve expends allowing fluids to flow. When the temperature fall. The valve contracts limiting the flow.

I have a one pipe heating radiator and my valve is EXTREMELY loud. Whenever it’s heating up, it squealing and sputters like crazy for quite some time. The radiator and valve is fairly old as well. How do I fix this? Thank you for reading

Second rh. Valve is shot and is no longer closing when the steam reaches it. You can get a new one at any home center or plumbing store. If you do replace it yourself just make sure your system is off and pipes are cold before you remove it. Additionally, remove it carefully as you do not want to strip the female threads in your pipe.

Ya’ll are referring to the vent, right? the little metal object that sits on the side of the radiator and hisses and spits? the valve sits close to the floor and turns the radiator on and off. If so, then, ya, you need to change the vent.

sewardwasright stopped short. if it is the device on the upper half of the far end of the radiator, it is the vent. See what seward says. if it is the device with a handle on it on the steam pipe into the radiator, then it is a valve. if the valve is making noise you may be able to tighten the packing nut or add graphite packing. I am not going to tell you how to do that as you may be better with a plumber – Steve

I’m going to assume the OP is talking about an air vent (technically a “valve”, too). You can change it out for a new one to see if that works, sure, but most often vents that start spitting and hissing loudly are a symptom of excessive pressure (clogged pigtail?) or a blocked return line, flooded boiler, etc.

your air vent is ok. the air vents on nearby radiators are bad, check and replace them.
