Plumber for lead water line replacement

Can anyone recommend a plumbing company for a lead water line replacement job? I need to replace the lead water line coming from the street main to my house’s basement. And I would like to know the approximate cost of this kind of job. Thanks! AM

We used Harris Water to replace a 1930s or 1940s main water line from the street. Their quote was a little less than the other two guys I asked but what impressed me was their customer service – they showed up on time, with the permits needed, arranged an arborist (a tree was right over the line) and finished the sidewalk repair very neatly. No fuss or drama.

We recently used Harris Water to replace the lead water main with copper and were pleased with the work. We had no issues with them when they did the job and have had no problems since.

I used Harris and they were very nice to work with and even came back to redo the cement work that I was not happy without a complaint. This is a big job and expensive as mine was what is called a long haul as the hydrant is across the street from my house.

i used to use figliolia until they started subbing out their jobs. since then, they are sloppy and consistently overpriced compared to some of the larger and more legitimate companies like balkan, harris and liberty. my recommendation is balkan.

I am expecting that this will cost around $3,000 to $4,000… I googled Figliolia for reviews and found half the reviews were glowing and half said don’t even think about using this company! Has anyone used a different company? and would it be worth it to subscribe to Angie’s List in order to find someone to do this? AM

AFAIK water main replacement is specialized work not done by regular plumbers. We used Alex Figliolia 20+ years ago and have had no problems since. I don’t recall what we paid, but I think it was considerably more than than the figure Sofiya mentioned.

Beware Mainmain. I recommended them in the past, but no longer. Months after their (industry standard) 10 year guarantee ran out, I had huge flooding pouring into my cellar which was determined to be due to their failed water main. In tracing the leak (which involved replacing the water main again) it was found that the massive leak was due to a totally failed coupling which was connecting 2 short pieces of water main buried underground in my front garden where there NEVER should have been a coupling. Furthermore, the coupling was overtightened and was probably cracked during the install. When getting prices for the second replacement, I gave Mainman the opportunity to replace the main again at a reduced rate and they refused. I’m glad they didn’t because I’m sure they never would have shown me the cause of the failure. Second time around I used Figliola. This should be a once-in-a-lifetime expense.
