Hi all, We are in a 4 story attached brownstone in Prospect Heights –and oil bills are quite high. The boiler is recent and heat is okay. Here are my questions re converting to gas (sorry there are so many, but appreciate your help!): 1\. We have two apartments and the thermostat is in the lower duplex. Can we install a second thermostat in the upper unit? The idea is that the lower unit would control the heat but if it’s too cold the upper unit would be able to set a higher temp to override the other thermostat. 2\. Will we need to install a chimney liner? 3\. Will we likely need a bigger gas line — we have one for the stoves currently. 3\. Given your responses above, how long will the work take altogether? 4\. Can the gas boiler be sized based on the oil boiler? 5\. What can go wrong? Thanks!

1.Yes, you can install 2 thermostats in parallel wiring. The boiler would fire based on the colder room. 2\. Probably. 3\. Probably. You need a 1″ minimum gas line from the meter to the boiler area. 3\. No one here knows until they see the job. 4\. Yeah, but it’ll probably be wrong. The boiler needs to be sized according to the connected load, or EDR, which is the sum of the exposed area of all the surfaces of the system (piping and radiators) that emit heat to the space. 5\. Lots of things. Too many to list, in fact. Basically, there are confident plumbing/heating contractors that install boilers wrong all the time and no one calls them out on it because they have no idea. Good luck. Hipoldergal, Do you rent the upper unit? If so, you should not allow tenants to control the temperature of their unit unless they are contributing to the heating bill.
