We want to install an hydronic towel warmer in our bathroom but our contractor says that it is not legal to install them connected to our hot water heater. NYC law on this is different than NY State law apparently. Anyone out there have one, and if so how was it installed?

it has to be connected to your hydronic heating system, e.g. your boiler….if you have steam heat, , you could create a seperate hydronic zone, mixed down in temperature via a mixing valve…a fairly costly endevour

I think, The Myson Towel Warmer COS125 now is the first model in this round up that is affordable for the masses while still stylish and functional.

Someone trashed this company a while back, but Hudson Reed has great inexpensive towel warmers. I’ve got two and have never had a problem with them. They look way more expensive than they are.

OP here. After many discussions with the architect and the contractor, we decided to switch to an electric towel warmer despite the higher initial price. The cost to install a separate plumbing loop for the hydronic system was more than the higher price of the electric towel warmer itself so it turned out to be a wash, cost-wise. Not sure why the plumbing supply company would be selling hydronic systems if they can’t legally be installed in NYC using the most simple installation method listed by the manufacturer. We are going with a Myson towel warmer. Hope it winds up being worth it!

there are many building codes in NYC that make things illegal where they are legal in most of the country. Usually this can be traced back to larger developement and union labor. Unions constantly lobby for new code under the veil of safety. Some with merrit, some not. Of course the result is always more expensive (usually labor). Hummm. Unfortunately the trickle down hurts the small guy.

The plumbing supply companies sell hydronic towel warmers because most people prefer to install them in a compliant way. Why wouldn’t you? The reason installing things like towel warmers, radiators, radiant floor heating, etc., onto domestic water heaters is because during the warmer months when the heating devices aren’t being used, the water contained in them becomes stagnant and things like legionella form. It’s a real concern to have this water mix with the water you use to shower, wash your clothes, dishes, etc. OH EM GEE that “Union Labor” argument, pig three…. We have stricter codes where we all live on top of each other and people can’t be trusted to only poison themselves and their families. Cities need that kind of regulation, urban areas don’t have the shared services the way we do.
