Broken pipe/main on the block...who's responsible?

Hi all, We’re out of town and just heard that a fire department is outside an aparently abandoned house in Bed-stuy as a main burst, and all the basements on the block are severly flooded (our boiler is covered with water..). As of now ConEd is digging trying to fine the main to seal it (They’ve been doing this for 5-6 hours at least) We are going to hire someone to do the pumbing of the basement. I’m wondering who is responsible in this case? What should we do? Many thanks! Cat

I’m having a hard time understanding how a maybe 1″ line going to the abandoned property flooded all the neighboring basements 3′ or more. Sounds like an actual city main break. Regardless, your homeowners should cover it and they in turn would look to collect from the city.

In reality, the only way you will get reimbursed for this is through your jomeowner’s insurance.  If they opt to go after the City, that’s up to them.  Otherwise you could sue the city yourself but good luck with that.

Call your homeowners insurance company as they may know who is responsible and/or call the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development or 311.
