Removing Verizon feeder cable attached to my bldg.

I had a similar situation when I was doing my reno. There were two old boxes on the back of the house, had been there for 40 years, Verizon just kept adding and adding, wires everywhere. We were putting on an addition, couldn’t get them to respond, so I just told them the back wall was coming out in two days and they better get there pronto to reroute the old wires or it was going to cause havoc in the neighborhood. They sent out a team from the Right-Away department and took care of it. Fixed up all the wires on my neighbor’s side as well.

I’m building an extension and need a thick Verizon feeder cable removed from my bldg.,
The cable runs across the width of my bldg., than goes to a telephone pole located in the rear of my backyard.  I’d prefer not re-attaching it to the new extension because a) it’s ugly, and b) it’ll require a few dozen hooks in my new stucco.

I started calling the Verizon Right of Way Dept. last spring and am running out of time and patience.
Simply cutting the cable crossed my mind  but there are legal consequences since it would affect 911 calls.  Verizon’s given me 2 options. Either reconnect the cable to my extension, or run it thru my yard to the telephone pole, underground in conduit, .

1) Am I legally required to allow Verizon to attach cables to my bldg., or run it underground thru my yard, since there’s currently a feeder cable on my property.
2) Is there a downside running conduit underground along my property borders? Maybe I’m making too much fuss about this.
3) Am I entitled to non-monetary compensation in return for granting them access, such as free phone service, or whatever?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do what I did. Cut it by accident and then don’t be available to let them back there to fix it.Then, start calling verizon to complain that you have no service and demand something be done. They will re-route in no time. If they start making demands, make your own demands – like free service in exchange for ensuring that your inexperienced contractors don’t damage it again, and to ensure easy access next time. The law that gives them the right to use your property is an old law enacted when there was one phone company and that company was required by federal law to provide wired service to every address in the United States. That company (Bell) was closely regulated in terms of phone rates and allowable rate of profit. That law is now being used by companies reaping mega-profits to provide non-essential amenities like tv and internet. They should pay for access just like they pay for roof-top access for the phone repeaters, but they continue to take advantage of a law written in the 20’s under very different circumstances and for a very different purpose. But there are many ways to incentivize them to either move it, or compensate you.

Very interesting EME.  I also have a bad wire situation but it’s on the roof and sides of a 1 story corner building.  Phone, cable and dataservice for the rest of my buildng and the six adjacent houses splay and sag all along the house wall and side wall of my deck.  Several times a year I find little scraps of wire litter from workers.  Any further tips on how can I make this go away?

You are legally required to provide right of way without compensation. There is no downside to allowing them to install underground conduit unless you plan on installing an in-ground pool later.
