Powderpost beetles -- experiences and exterminator recommendation?
We just moved into a prewar apartment and I keep finding mysterious little piles of yellowish “dust” — mostly in or under new-ish woodwork (cabinets, shelving) put in by previous owner, but also along original pocket doors. Googling suggests powderpost beetles. Anyone had these and what did you do? Can you recommend an exterminator experienced with this? Usual building exterminator was doom and gloom, didn’t even want to look.

Alternatively, you could have bought the products yourself, which would have rung up to no more than $80 and done the removal. I don’t know which product you should have used but I’m sure this guide lists it: http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/powderpost-beetles-c-54.html

I just went through a powderpost beetle problem discovered while we were renovating our 1880’s rowhouse. We used Ban A Bug from Staten Island (718-966-8812). Very familiar with powderpost beetles and how to treat them. The only difference is that I had open ceilings and walls which made it easy to spray the exposed wood (existing and new). Give Tommy a call, I don’t know if they will travel to the city. Good luck
