Hi there. I am a newbie brownstone owner (just closed in March). My neighbor pointed out that I have birds entering/exiting via a hole on the side of my roof area. Lo and behold, I saw 2 birds. I can’t tell what the material is up there. I called pest control companies and they indicated they don’t have ladders high enough to get to the roof. One suggested that I use a general contractor. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? HELP!

I would start with a bird rescue group. This way you don’t harm the birds and it’s a win/win situation. http://citybirder.blogspot.com/p/wildlife-rescuers.html

There are some companies that will try to reach from your roof (depending on type of roof, etc.). But a word of caution, you MUST use someone familiar with birds and bird mites, otherwise you risk a bird mite infestation a million times worse and harder to eliminate than bedbugs. http://www.birdmites.org/

We had the same issue last summer. It started in spring last year, every morning at about 4 or 5 am I’d hear birds and squirrels scurrying about. It was crazy loud. We then realized that we had 2 large holes in our cornice (since it’s painted black it was hard to see at first). We hired a contractor to close the holes. I think they used it as warm refuge in the spring because by summer (when we closed the holes) the area was empty. Since then I haven’t heard/seen anything. The contractor accessed the holes by crawling through the soffit and getting on the roof. I should also mention that in the beginning when I wasn’t sure what animal was up there I had our exterminator check it out and they placed baits in case there were rats (that didn’t make the animals go away). I didn’t have much success in getting Animal Control to come and trap whatever was up there.
