Bats in drain pipes?
So… I was cleaning out my back yard mesh drain cover, and as I lifted it up, I noticed two small red bats clinging to the underside of it! It’s covered on top by a metal drain top. The only way that they could have gotten there is by crawling from the city sewer into my house line or down my roof drain to the underside of my garden drain. Of course after being slightly taken aback I began to wonder about this. Anyone have a similar experience? Should I be concerned of try to prevent it? I don’t want a bat infestation in my drain pipes! Any insight would be much appreciated. Bat Curious.

I’ll take them if you really don’t want them. Bats are awesome.

If I were you, I would be trying to encourage them to stay. For some reason people think bats are bad. The reason Brooklyn has such a horrible mosquito problem is because of the declining bat population (each bat can eat around 600 mosquitos a day). They rarely cause property damage and your chances of getting any diseases are slim to none (there were only 17 cases in the entire United States from 1997-2006). I would be more worried about living to close to the BQE. Dont let them leave!!!

Do you live near a body of water? Bats are good. They polinate plants from which we get food. They mean prosperity in some cultures They eat mosquitos. They need our help because of a real infestation: a fungus is killing them. Call the Audibon Ctr in Prospect Park, which runs bat tours of the park.
