stripping paint from wood doors/window - lead issues
I need to have layers of paint removed from two wooden doors and a tall window with wooden moldings. A home test indicates there is lead (not surprising in an old building). Who should i hire to do this job?

If you want to abate the lead paint, you really need a certified lead abatement company to do this work. They can document and insure that your wood is lead free. If you want to strip the wood to restore back to its original condition, you can pick a restoration company the is certified by the EPA as following lead safe practices. This should mean that they won’t create any lead dust, or contaminate the house any more than it may already be. But that does not necessarily mean the wood is lead free. So, your reasons for stripping will determine what you need to do.

I could say anyone becuase a few years ago anyone could do it. now they have to be EPA certified – but here is the catch, if you hire an EPA certified contractor for this and you ask him to do this as he should legally do it, the job is going to cost a bit more. what I would do is hire someone to chemically strip it. the lead will be bound in the chemicals that fall off. Now here is where it gets tricky and if you have kids in the house, this is where you want to pay attention: sanding. a customer of mine had her window frames stripped and wanted me to sand them out and stain them. she was rightly concerned about lead being put into the air in her house where she has a family. What she did for me was split the cost of an EPA certified HEPA sanding system (and I am ever grateful to her for this as I do not know how I lived so long without it; I know you are reading this; thank you). We used the sanding system to sand the wood. You need to find someone with one of those to remove the final paint residue and sand out the wood. Also, I do not know how true it is, but an old man once told me that a lot of the lead gravitates from the paint into the wood. Someone else will pipe in here with the names of some good strippers (wood). Steve
