Painting over Anaglypta - is special care needed?

We are installing anaglypta wallpaper in our home (taking out the original anaglypta which was gouged in many places) as part of a gut reno. My contractor will be painting the whole interior of the house, but I’ve been advised to get someone separate to do the wallpapering (while we’re at it – any recommendations for that?). I am wondering – does one need to take special care in painting over anaglypta or does one use the the usual methods of painting on regular walls? Just trying to figure out if I am going to need to hire someone separate to do that too….

There are different opinions when it comes to painting over anaglypta.  Personally, I would suggest an alkyd primer after the paper is up for a few days.  Most of the painters I deal with tend to find that the acrylic primers will cause the anaglypta to bubble at the seams. See what your painter thinks.  If you find one experienced in painting over this stuff, they will most likely have their own preference. matt

I can’t help with the painting over wallpaper, but it just sounds like a bad idea to me.   It is very very hard to find someone good at installing wallpaper these days (trust me, I’ve searched far and wide and had some do bad jobs).  We recently had Alan Rada (http://www.decorada.com/  he’s much easier to get over the phone) remove some old paper, poorly installed new paper, and put up paper in three rooms.  I’m happy with his work. Prices for good installers seem really high but from my recent experiences, it’s worth it, especially if you are putting up pricey paper that has little extra for errors.
