deposit for painter

No way. I have never paid a painter a dime until the work is completed. I supply the paint. This sounds extremely suspicious. If he’s so worried, you could pay his men for one day’s work after they complete the first day. Either way, sounds like he owes money to his workers. I’d find someone else.

Hello,   We have found a painter and are set to have out house painted the first week of May.  He wants a 50% deposit now and the rest after completion.  That seems a bit high and early to me. He did say if we were realy uncomfortable, we could give him 25% now, 25% before they start, and the final 50% upon completion.  Any opinions?

Before you do that, go to clickandimprove.com, service and repairs and then painters. The full payment is taken via credit card, but the funds are not released to the contractor for 7 days after the job is done to ensure you are a satisfied customer. The contractors are licensed and bonded. If nothing else, compare the pricing to ensure you are not paying too much.

That’s not unusual.  After all, they have to buy all the paints and one time use tools and materials up front.  That a big piece of a painting job.

If it’s a small job that can be done in a couple of days then yeah contractors will ask for 50% deposit and 50% after completion. However, if it’s a big job then the contractor will typically ask for multiple payments with progress. But they will always ask for a deposit. Make sure the person is reliable and will not run away with your money. You can ask for references and know that it’s legit business that has done business around the neighborhood.

Depending on the size of the project an initial deposit of 20-25% is fair. 50% is a very high deposit. I suggest you find out if the painter is a real painter and not a scam. Ask for a couple of references before giving any money.

that is a lot.  with most of our work we ask for a small depo to book and then ask for a big chunk at the start.  For instance, we are starting something next week and I have told the customer I will need a big depo as my labor will be high the first week. Steve

I would be wondering why he needs the deposit so early if he isn’t painting until May. And 50% now is crazy, he probably is having a cash flow problem. Ask for an address too, once I had a problem with a contractor and found out I couldn’t report him without a business address.

Most importantly Make sure the painters company is reputable and if so make a formal contract between you and the painter get it signed and notarized this way if anything happens you can take court action.

50% is high, New york best finish contracting charged me 25% but I guess it all depends on the size of the project I recomend them, and I know they are opening and ofice in parkslope
