New 4th and Atlantic Avenue Traffic Pattern a Freakin' Nightmare!

Whoever thought dead ending 4th Avenue at Atlantic Avenue would be a solution to the mess that is the Atlantic/Flatbush/4th Avenue intersection should be forced to sit in the resulting back up every morning until the DOT changes it back to the way it was!  What a freakin’ mess today.  I knew this wasn’t going to work. Forcing drivers to either turn right onto Pacific Street or left onto Atlantic and right onto 3rd Avenue in order to access northbound Flatbush Avenue and the Manhattan bridge caused traffic to be backed much more than it was on a typical day before the traffic pattern change. And today is a slow summer traffic day. Imagine what this will be like when the summer is over.  Traffic was not only jammed for hours on 4th Avenue approaching Atlantic, it was backed up on Flatbush approaching Atlantic because of the additional traffic pouring onto Flatbush at Pacific Street. Westbound Atlantic Avenue was a mess between 4th and 3rd Avenues. And 3rd Avenue approaching Atlantic was the worse I had ever seen it!  Please, DOT, admit your mistake and change it back to the way it was. The better solution would be to train traffic cops adequately and have them make sure that cars do not enter the intersection if they can’t make it all the way through without blocking traffic from the perpendicular direction of the light changes.  It’s a simple thing.  Meanwhile. Boerum Hill around 3rd and 4th Avenues was completely impassable.

the new pattern for accessing the Brooklyn Bridge from Tillary Street is nuts too. You have to drive past the bridge access road and then make a U-turn on Tillary at the following light. I think it is the Mayor’s campaign to discourage driving.

The latest reroute sounds crazy. 

Has anyone noticed that traffic on the side streets in the Slope has gotten a lot worse since this whole AY thing started?  My sense was that I was seeing (and hearing idiotic honking from!) many more cars in the am at Sterling and 7th than I had before, and a neighbor came back from a semester out of town and wondered if traffic had picked up all around.

Is this another gift from Atlantic Yards?  or just an attempt to resolve the bad situation that existed there long before AY?
