Crown Heights

Hey guys, so I am seriously considering moving to 801 Bergen which is *technically* in Crown Heights, and I was wondering if you guys could give me some solid advice as to what to expect there.  Basically, started the application process already, then read a bunch of scary stats about recent shootings in the area (further east, although one happened a couple of months ago just two blocks away), not I’m sure how heavily to weigh that information.  Also, the block before it on Bergen is solely auto repair shops—seems like it would be pretty desolate at night. I’m a younger woman and will be living with my boyfriend, but of course there will be times I’ll want to go out at night by myself.  Any thoughts/advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Crown Heights is fine… Funny thing is that this Crow Hill/ ProCro section is not really in the CHNA radar.. But you will be okay…. As time goes on Crown Heights North will be a hard area to get into…

That is a totally okay area – I have been spending time on Washington Ave. all summer quite quite late and never get any weird vibes, and a female friend who lives there reports the same (although I’m male). You are right near a lot of foot traffic and you will totally dig the place.

Crown Heights is an awesome part of Brooklyn… The area is diverse, historic and very convenient, especially to the trains! Isn’t that what NYC is about?!? The section you speak of, though semi-commercial, it has a great deal of new residential buildings and is located very close to Prospect Heights. You will be fine and certainly happy with your choice! FYI in NYC Crime happens everywhere, even in the best areas!

Desolate and kind of ugly in terms of scenery, but otherwise safe. New condos in the area have sprouted up lately alongside new bars and cafes in the area. The downside is that you’re kind of a hike from most things, including the subway, but if the price is right, why argue.

Crown Heights is fine, but I would be concerned living on a desolate block in any neighborhood. You should go on the Crown Heights North tour this weekend and get a feel for the area and community. If the apartment really is a huge bargain, you can always take a cab home on those late, late nights.

I think your concern should be more about the scarcity of people near that light industrial patch that your place is at the edge of. Definitely sketchier with less people around in my opinion.   We live closer to Nostrand (me, my wife and toddler) and we’ve seen HUGE positive changes in the neighborhood since moving in the summer of 2010\. There’s obviously been some serious incidents of crime in the area, but it’s almost always drug related (and West Indian Parade related unfortunately). Your place is so close to Washington, you’re likely not going to be taking long walks through totally desolate areas (assuming you’re heading to Clinton Washington C). I wouldn’t worry too much. Depends more on your schedule (working late a lot, walking dog late at night etc). I’d say that’s pretty safe.

The stats you read are probably true, and definitely the shooting a month or 2 ago during the west indies day parade is absolutely true. I also heard rumors of gang members living in that area. I’m not trying to scare you or anything but I’m just sharing with you what I know about the neighborhood. IMO, this neighborhood including bed-stuy is ever so slowly gentrifying but it will likely take several more years before it becomes anything remotely similar to Williamsburg. Personally I would pay more to live in a gentrified neighborhood, or pay the same to live deeper in Brooklyn for a longer commute where it’s safer.
