Old Brownstone front door handle

Hot water, mild dish soap (Dawn), scrub lightly with soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly. Or smear with ketchup (no joke), let sit a minute, scrub lightly with soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly.

I’m trying to clean/restore the original door handles of my house. I don’t know what material they are made from which makes it harder to do research. Vinegar, lemon, baking soda? Or should I try something like CLR or Tarn-X? Any insights are much appreciated.

Normally, I recommend you avoid mixing chemicals. But in this case you can mix all three together. Try it in your toilet. After the eruption, which neutralizes the acid, you will achieve exactly the best result, in my opinion, nothing. Just keep it the way it is. That is a terrific picture. Don’t change a thing, wear a full face shield, and if it is your only crapper, you might want to use it normally before the experiment.

Oh yea, it’s bronze. Restoring it would be a professional job. Your current green finish is the natural patina, a perfect match for the original door. It is not easy being that way, but it is beautiful.

If they are painted, you can boil them and the paint will simply peel off. Brasso will remove the gunk if its brass.

Those door handles need to be restored professionally as Green Mountain suggested. We can offer our services.
