Is a dwarf weeping Japanese maple viable in this spot?
If you go to a good garden center, they should be able to make sure you’re getting a tree that’s right for your conditions. If you’re choosing a tree because of leaf color, that can be affected by the amount of light. I think a lot of those red/purple-leaved japanese maples grow well in shady spots but the leaves go green and flowering trees tend to not have many flowers. Kings County Nursery has some good plants, but help from staff is hit or miss. Weisner Brothers in Staten Island has a huge selection and I’ve talked to several employees there who seemed to know their plants well. Brooklyn Terminal market has some vendors with small trees that are popular around here.

I have a brick planter box that’s 5′ x 4′ but only 19″ deep. I would like to plant a dwarf weeping japanese maple which would grow to only a few feet high. It’s in the small plaza in front of my brownstone.
The place gets only a few hours of sunlight a day and I’m concerned about the 19″ depth.
Is it doable?

It should be fine. I have a maple tree in a very similar location, that gets about 3-4 hours of morning sun, in a smaller container. It’s doing very well. Of course, as with all plants in containers, it requires more care: side-dressing with compost twice a year, regular watering in the summer, and some winter protection.

thanks, yea, your container looks even smaller than mine. What do you mean by side-dressing and winter protection?
