Non standard brick coursings - 'hollow wall'

http://cdn.brownstoner.com/4e77774ce8f38-processed-httpbuildipediacomimagesmasterformatdiv0420drawings042113_brickmasonryBrick_Coursingjpg.jpg

I hope I can explain this clearly with using the included drawing as reference….. I hope to use the terms correctly
We have an exposed brick side wall in in our old townhouse – pre 1880… Form the outside of the house the situation looks like the bottom drawing. Three coursing of stretchers for every coursing of header. On the inside the stretcher has been laid on the long edge (similar to the middle drawing). This results in two courses of stretcher per one course of header on the inside and a partially hollow space of about one inch between the inside and outside bricks for the strecher coursings.
There will be several new opening on these walls and we will have sistered joists.
Did anybody deal with a similar situation. I am curious to get in contact with owners that encountered the same situation and GCs that handled this….

It appears that the construction of the brick wall is a hybrid. You need to fully expose the area and have a licensed architect or professional engineer look at it and design the required lintels and structural support. Ed Kopel Architects

Agreed! Question is if additionally the hollow space between the bricks need to be filled as well, which would quite a process to say the least.

What’s the question? All openings need lintels regardless of coursing pattern.
