How can I replicate this crown molding?

Hey Brownstoners, I have nice original plaster crown molding in several rooms in our house (see attached photo) but it’s missing in others. What are my options for restoring in in the rooms where it’s missing and what are the pros and cons of each (get a plasterer to copy the original, wood?, foam/). Obviously I’m looking for as close a match as possible to the original molding. Appreciate it.

Make a template of the existing crown or if it has details you should make a mould form to match existing. Did couple of them this week. Wish you the best.

if you want a great, local contractor, i’d like to recommend myezbz.com.. my aunt found this amazing contractor there (even handsome, haha!).. the work was great and the price was reasonable.. she didn’t even have to call anyone over the phone.. ^_^

You can search youtube for replacing crown moldings. There look to be two main options – Make a mold using latex (or something similar) and then make new moldings with plaster of paris, or make a knife with the shape of the crown moldings and run it along fresh plaster. My contractor used the second option for some missing moldings and it came out very well.

Get a plasterer to replicate the original. Your existing plaster moulding is not a perfect extrusion so wood or foam will not match it perfectly. Even if it did, you’d still need a plasterer to feather the joints. Also you’re not looking for a taper/skim coater for this, you’re looking for a company that specializes in creating plaster mouldings in place.
