Fallen Lintel

Last night the lintel from the center of the window on the top floor of my (painted brick) townhouse just fell off and crashed to street level! Thank G*D that no one was in the front yard.  Now I’m figuring out the next move; seems that I certainly need a mason, but I’m wondering if I need to have an engineer look at it first. There’s been no work that would precipitate this, but I did notice that the above the window, in the 4′ parapet area, there has been brick spalling, although I reflashed the roofing behind it and repainted the front of the house a few years back. I am guessing this is connected. As others have posted, I purchased the house with the brick painted and it’s too costly of a job to remove the paint and repoint, but I was thinking that perhaps I could swing doing so on the inside of the parapet wall, facing the roof, so at least the brick that’s spalling can be repaired. Potentially, that could prevent more falling lintels? As always, looking forward to the collective wisdom of this forum. Also open to any new mason (and engineer?) recommendations but I did mine the archives for masons. Thank you Brownstoners!
