Eco Roof Deck Tiles laid directly onto torched rubber roof membrane?

http://cdn.brownstoner.com/5163358c9a4a7-.jpg

Hi there I have an estimate and a sample of a recycled plastic roof deck tile from a Canadian company called Renew Resources. They said it can be laid down on the current roof surface as is, we have silver torched rubber bitmus surface, and the roof was recently done. It is an old Brownstone conversion into condo units. I am worried about laying this directly down onto the roof surface, according to their specs it should be fine, but still, do we need another membrane or something between it? It is self laid down without adhesives or fixtures. I worry will it potentially damaged the seal and cause leaks? The cost is a lot less than a wood deck would cost us. Almost a third of the cost of wood decking. please see photo of the sample tile underside, this is smaller than the actual tile I believe, the ones on the webpage are 22 3/4″ x 22 3/4″ x 1 1/4″ with three cross slats underneath. The sample is more like 12X12. Thanks so much, any roof expertise is appreciated.   this is copied form their PDF but still I worry: The unique design accommodates the pro???le of torch-on roofs while. The riser strips give the deck tiles 1 3/8″ of clearance from the roof-top surface. This unique design allows for easy water and debris drainage and virtually eliminates any potential for damage or membrane puncture.

The recycled plastic would be considered combustible. By code it is restricted to 20% of the roof area.

Wood or Porcelain Deck Tiles with their needed plastic pedestals underneath them to allow for drainage are an inferior and unprofessional way of installing a deck on an unevenly sloped roof. You are still legally responsible for filing the job. Alternatively hire a deck specialist to do the job right.

With the GreatMat, you don’t use adhesive or put anythign down. We used the Earth color. Ordering more now $675 for 15 (60 sq ft.)

I used a combination of these (http://www.bisonip.com/deckSupports.php) and customer fabricated aluminum decking tiles. Cost a pretty penny but well worth it http://cruftlabs.tumblr.com/post/49087928150/deck

We have the type same roof and put  Great Mat DeckTOP Architectural Tiles over our roof. They’ve been great. Both the roofer who installed the roof and an  architect have inpsected the roof and gave it high marks. We laid them ourselves. Made it through the winter and Sandy without any problems. The roofer said it should help the roof last longer, since it provides another layer of protection. About to order more tiles.

For extra protection before you lie any tile product on the membrane you could also consider laying down an EPDM sheet (used for pool liners) which you can get from places such as bestmaterials.com or do a search on Amazon for ‘Protective Rubber Mat for Roof Top Membrane’ and you’ll find a similar type of product. The orientation of that particular product would indeed be important for good water flow but you can also get deck tiles with a mesh plastic base e.g.  from handydeck.com which can be laid in any direction. Wood or composite wood tiles on a plastic mesh bases tend to have some slight flexibility in one direction so if you lay them in the right orientation, the tripping issue when laying them over a seam may not be too important.

A few things I would be worried about.  You would have to orient all of the tiles the same way  in order for the attached sleepers not to catch crud behind them.  Not a big deal, but just keep that in mind. The second concern is along the lines of yours.  You really shouldn’t put anything directly on a roof, but you could probably get away with it in the main area of the roof.  It’s going to be more problematic by the roof edges and chimney, any skylights, etc.  Flashing is supposed to be a nice crisp 90 degree bend, but it almost never is, the roofing is sort of rolled up the side and you get a cavity underneath.  If you put one of these tiles on  top of that, you run a real risk of it tearing the membrane.  You could probably address this by stopping the tiles a couple of feet from any flashing or parapet walls. Last and probably least, with the seams in the roofing, you run the risk of the tiles sitting on slightly different planes with one edge sticking up a fraction which could lead to some stubbed toes, or tripping.  Not the end of the world, but certainly annoying, especially if it’s your toe.
