Bluestone Installation

I am looking for someone to replace the concrete in my front yard with bluestone.Hopefully, someone responsive (e.g. returns calls!) and reliable. No luck in past with VinRoy Baronette, Buscarello apparently lost in space these days. Any recommendations?

i recommend anthony bauer (aka anthony the mason) for anything to do with stones. he’s done a bunch of work at our brownstone and is truly professional, reasonably priced and makes sure the job is done the way you want it. he’s at (347) 307-4725.

I second the recommendation for WP Bluestone. In the last 2 years, they’ve done 3 projects on the block around the corner from me. 2 of those home-owners were very pleased with the work; the other neighbor I don’t know. And while I’m not the person who hired them, as someone who walks this block to the subway 5 days a week, I can say the work looks great and is holding up close to perfectly.

I just got a quote for 7K to replace 150 sq ft of concrete with bluestone in my front yard – work includes carting and permits ….Does the number seem fair?

This is an old thread, but I’m going to post a recommendation anyway for Jeff Hewitt, who posted here earlier, and his Williamsburg Garden Company. I live in a landmarked block and had a number cracked bluestone slabs on my 25′ frontage that I needed to replace for insurance purposes. Jeff determined which of the existing slabs could be reused or cut onsite to repurpose, thereby saving me quite a bit of money, put together a very reasonable quote, and completed the job in a single day. The joints between the slabs are extremely tight – a huge cosmetic (and probably Landmarks, though I never received a ticket for it) improvement over the previous job some 15 years ago that required blue-tinted concrete filler. Jeff is super easy to work with and thoroughly knowledgable and transparent on the whole process, start to finish. Cleaned up completely afterwards, and offered to come back to re-sand between the joints when needed.

I did receive 2 other quotes for the work: one from a contractor who was very low priced but apparently not fully aware of Landmarks requirements , and a second from one who was Landmarks aware but priced much higher. Jeff was recommended by my a few of my neighbors, having done similar jobs on my block.

I posted a separate review/recommendation for WP Bluestone last week but got deleted by the system. Apparently it seemed like a spam? Anyway, read the recommendation here before we started our front yard remodeling and eventually hired WP Bluestone for the job. In short, the project was to replace the existing concrete floor with bluestone. However the detailed works involved so much more, including leveling different parts of the yard, resetting several large pieces of original bluestones and installing new drainage, water, electric conduit and even a cellar hatch cover. Joe and his crew did an excellent job overall. Joe himself was always professional and prompt on the communication throughout. He is very knowledgeable and experienced at what he does – he provided reasonable solution whenever we ran into any obstacles during the process. We are really happy with the final result and have received many compliments in the neighborhood. Highly recommend WP Bluestone for bluestone paving.

Thanks for posting, robr, could you give a ballpark for how much it cost? We got quoted $7500 to enlarge a tree box, level out our existing stone, and add a bit more to replace concrete.

I spent months, literally, trying to find a contractor to do our 16×10 sidewalk. It seems laying bluestone is a lost art. I needed the cement removed and large format bluestone put down. I talked to most of the masons in this thread as well as several others. None seemed willing or able to deal with this job. One in particular flaked out on me after signing a contract and being given a deposit! Others just never showed up to bid, or showed up then never bid, or were not equipped to lay large slabs, or clearly had no idea how to lay large format bluestone, e.g., wanted to set it on a concrete bed not crushed stone and gravel as required by city guidelines. In the end I hired WP Bluestone in the Bronx for our sidewalk job. The name says it all. They put down very large, thick slabs sourced from original bluestone quarries in upstate New York. They got all permits, raised and reset the curb, and lay the stone as evenly as bathroom tile! Not cheap, or quick, but fantastic and conscientious work. Highly recommended. I want to have this same sort of job done: rip out the existing concrete and put in large (6 feet by 4 feet) bluestone slabs. Lots of guys will do the small garden sized pavers, but I want the monster size traditional sidewalk slabs. I do have a source for the stone, but need a recco for a mason who is experienced in laying the large slabs in front of historic district houses.

Because of this thread, I contacted Rahmann. I needed an engineer and a construction co. I thought they were the answer. I was wrong. Instead of my needs being addressed, I got opinions on matters that did not related to the job. I have knowledge of construction. The engineer that came to estimate did not. He also misunderstood our needs and it took quite a while (and several different example scenarios) to get him to finally understand. By then, all I wanted was to gracefully end the encounter. I could only imagine what it would be like to have him misunderstand something crucial during the project. If you (or anyone else) are going to use them… please make certain that there is somone on the job who understands the scope of work completely.

Ok, I do not usually recommend other contractors here but I know these people well and know their committment to what they do.  Just a side note before I recommend them, when you look at their website you will see a lot of modern construction with modern use of stone; not what brownstoners are looking for.  But their site reflects where they have been working (by where I live in Queens).  They have shown me pictures of jobs they have done around old buildings in Manhattan and the work is superb.   The company is FSG Construction.  Their website is fsgconstruction.com.  I think people would be happy to deal with them.  If you call them, I would like to know about your experience, if it is outstanding, post it here – I will see it.  If they do something less than perfect, even during the quote process, call me, I want to know. Rahmann Contracting (646-423-0266) just re-set my bluestone sidewalk and where needed, supplied “new” bluestone. And I’m delighted with the results. IMHO I now have one of the best bluestone sidewalks in brownstone Brooklyn. Mohammed & his team are true professionals who gave 110%: they provided reasonably priced, quality work!!!
