how to secure basement hatch from inside

What are the best ways to retroactively create a mechanism to secure a basement hatch from the inside? Our current hatch, which is fairly new, is only locked with a padlock on the outside. Is this something we should ask a metalworker or locksmith for help with? Or is there a DIY way?

It is a Fire Department violation to lock the basement hatches from the inside. They should only be locked with a padlock on the outside, so that in an emergency the fire department can get in when they need to.

You can have a slide bolt installed on the inside. I would recommend NEVER dead bolting the hatches. In the event that you have work done on the boiler or gas lines and they become compromised you want as many egresses in and out of the space.

On one of mine in the back, there’s a sliding bolt that seats into a hole in the masonry. You’d need an iron worker to do it. In the front I have a grate that’s covered so I loop a chain over the grate & padlock that to an eye in the masonry below. Maybe you could have an iron worker just add a metal circle under your hatch so you could loop a chain?
