entry door lock/hardware questions
I’ve done some research on the forums, but wanted a newer take from folks on this topic…. Our 2 panel ‘historic’ entry doors have a deadbolt which just recently bit the dust and needs replacement. We have a second door with 2 locks on it (one of which is self-locking). Our tenants do a good job of locking the entry deadbolt behind them, but the mailmen who have access into the entry doors via a security lock box where the key is kept have a bad habit of not locking the door behind them. We want to replace the deadbolt with the best option — should we be looking at a ‘slam-lock’ for this door, or some other option? What do you all have? Bonus points — on the second panel for the entry door we have what I’ve determined is called a ‘cremone bolt’ ([cremone bolt example](http://www.remodelista.com/files/styles/733_0s/public/img/sub/uimg/01-2013/baldwin-cremone-bolt.jpg)). It is a floor to ceiling bolt which serves to latch the door closed — this thing is busted which is a problem for us. So far both miguel locksmith and 5th avenue key shop have said they dont work on this hardware. Any ideas where to go? The door pre-dates our ownership of the building and so I have no clue where else to turn.

Simone Hardware in the city handles Baldwin – but I am not sure what they will stock. we order all of ours on-line in bulk. if you want to order some from my supplier – and he will ship them fast – call daniel at Bolton Hardware, 909-594-1683\. you can see their listings for these on ebay and they run specials from time-to-time (on ebay). you can tell danial “steve the door guy in NY gave (you) his name and number.” he is a great guy but I am not sure I should be giving his name out for non business-to-business orders. dykes can order deltana. Steve

yes, i already removed the cremone bolt and will move to slide bolts — any recommendations on where to pick up something semi-attractive locally?

you know, I am wondering if you can ditch the cremone bolt (these are pricey and can be finicky) and install slide bolts on the passive door and a traditional lock on the active door. I have tended to notice over the years that cremone bolts are used on narrow stile doors/windows with the bolt serving to secure both the passive and active door at the same time. if you have a narrow stile and that is the reason for the bolt, it is possible to get a narrow stile lock from baldwin or install an adams rite narrow stile lock which is made for aluminum store front doors. We have used both in narrow stiles and the adams rite offers high security. Steve

you can also get a vestibule lock. but is will always lock when you close it. Marks makes these as well. Steve

I always had a mortise set that locks and a deadbolt. They can be keyed alike and if the postman forgets to lock the separate deadbolt, at least the mortise set will keep the door locked as it can be set in a locking or unlocking position. I never had to deal with mailmen gaining access to doors though.

we ordered a cremone bolt made by Frank Allert in Birmingham (UK) through Killian Hardware in (I think) Philly. it is possible to fix these when they break. we work on them in the course of our work on larger projects as we are not simply locksmiths. we sometimes get customers who wish a slam lock as they have either tenants or teenagers in the house. most customers wish to get rid of them as the most common slam lock is the large and protruding Segal or Yale. What we now recommend is a mortise slam lock made by Marks. Krown Hardware on Broadway (brooklyn) carries them. Steve

It depends what’s broken. I ordered a cremone set on line & installed it myself.
