2″ riser pipes, when filled with steam and having a 210° surface temperature will release 212 BTUs per foot per hour in 70° ambient air temp.
1.5″ pipe under the same conditions will release 173 BTUs per hour.
A typical, 1930’s two-column, 26″ tall steam radiator will release ~638 BTUs per section, or about every 5 inches worth.
So, weigh those numbers using the height of your riser vs the length or number of sections of your radiator and you’ll see which gives you more or less heat.
If your room is in a townhouse, attached to heated homes on both sides, figure sometihng like 22-30 BTUs per square foot for a rough idea of how much heat you need in the room.

masterplvmber, if you’re still reading: on top floor, at end of run, will you get the same heat output from riser or radiator? Can a riser be reinstalled if previous owner did a botch job replacing it with a radiator?

It’s usually fine to remove the riser down to it’s closest thread and pipe in a radiator instead.
