parlor ceiling light

hey all, does anyone have suggestions for period appropriate ceiling lamps/chandeliers (front parlor of 1905 limestone, renaissance revival, oak woodwork, 10-ft ceiling.) I am sick of my cheesy 1970s fake crystal chandelier. Any suggestions of styles or sources welcome. thanks!

Don’t know if you’re still looking but I have two re-wired brass pan-lights (c. 1920s). Email me at r185@aol.com if interested.  Thanks.

Schoolhouse Electric out of Portland Or.  I have several of their pieces.  They use the original molds to re-create the period pieces. However, I also have a few original 1920s lighting fixtures that I uncovered at flea markets and antique stores.  One such piece, a lovely original school house light fixture now hanging my dining room was covered in layers of dust and grime at a shop on Atlantic Avenue.    My advice, either look to Portland, Or for very good replicas or look under the dust and grime of local shops.   I

I’d find out if my house had gas originally, gas and electric combined, or just electric, and go for that. Some beautiful fixtures available around this time with lovely blue swirl shades. I like to look at http://www.antiquelight.com because they have what are surely the most remarkable fixtures in the U.S. but I like to buy at http://www.seattlebuildingsalvage.com/ and Ruby Lane because the prices are good, and it’s more the simple stuff that would have been in our house anyway (we don’t live in a Robber Baron mansion). If you want to see what lights people had in their houses in NYC at this time, check out the book “New York Interiors at the Turn of the Century,” reprints of photographer Joseph Byron published by Dover.

I have a couple of really heavy ones I would sell you.  One is probably about 1910-1920 with neo-clssical features and an egg and dart canopy and heavy chain, takes 4 lightbulbs, edison bulbs look good.  Not sure what metal it is under the original finish.  The other is many pounds of bronze, kind of gothic art-deco and needs small cast socket, one among about 10 sockets.  If interested send an email address to me at aaron@gmcandd.com

I’m a sucker for a Maria Theresa chandelier.  We have to replace ours in the front parlor at some point, too and there are a lot of shops on the Bowery, all are willing to negotiate.

Very nice chandeliers: www.abclighting.net. You can even get wax candles for the lights, good for up to 60 watts each.
