Lighting - Garden Floor Dining Room

We are doing a gut renovation of our 17ft wide, three floor brownstone and are wondering what to do about lighting on the garden floor (which only has a 7’5″ ceiling).    The front of the garden floorwill primarily serve as a dining room, with a long dining room table.  We had planned to place a hanging rectangular shade pendant over the dining room table.  But since the ceiling is only 7.5 feet high, we now think that will make the room feel very cramped.  So, we’re looking for other options.  Maybe recessed lights?  Anyone have any thoughts on this or any other suggestions?    FYI, the garden floor has no original details left, so we don’t need to worry about mucking up the look of the floor with “modern” lighting (the rest of the house has most of its original details, but the garden floor was remodeled in the sixties and didn’t have any left).  Also, the back of the garden floor will be primarily kitchen, with sliding glass doors opening on to the back yard.  We’re going to have ample lighting in the kitchen, with a combination of flushmounts and a few small pendants over the island.  Thanks in advance….

Oh, I see, the rectangular shade is very large. Just get one or two smaller fixtures. Mock them up with tape and paper and string, see how you like the size and shape.

Figure out in advance exactly where your dining room table will go. Then hang whatever kind of pendant lamp you like over the table at the usual height for over a table. You have plenty of room. No one will walk into it because it’s over the table.

For low ceilings people recommend light reflected from the ceiling surface.for example scone lights on the walls.

The shade is going to cut whatever view you have off. You need something that you can see though. Recess lights in such areas I really only use in the corners for supplement lighting. Go to a few lighting stores (nyc has tons) and find something you like that fits your budget and style.
