Installing DIY light fixture

I live in a rental and I would like to install a chandelier in the living room. I made the Lindsey Adelman DIY chandelier www.lindseyadelman.com/youmakeitchandelier. I plan to have a licensed electrician install the fixture. However, after reading through some blog posts and comments about the fixture, it seems like some people would be hesitant to install the fixture in a rental because if it’s not a UL listed lighting fixture, it negates the insurance on the building. If you were a landlord, would you be hesitant to let your tenant install a DIY light fixture even if an electrician installed it?

what if find interesting is OP you have the skills to make a diy light fixture but can’t make two connections and attach to electrical box? one of the easier projects to tackle in the house, and invaluable for saving money. Some basic safety precautions, a couple of tools and a ladder. It really is a piece of cake. i bet you could become an expert after viewing a few youtube videos. You should definitely respect electricity (respect it a lot) but there is no need to automatically fear it. IMHO

I too agree with DIBS (and cmu) but I could see why a licensed electrician MIGHT refuse to install a non-listed fixture. What I don’t understand is why anyone would hire such a high-priced professional to perform such a simple DIY job.

There’s no reason to ground a light fixture. Are your table lamps grounded? Your computer (most of them?) Your bedside clock? Even small appliances like toasters and coffee grinders? Most are double-insulated. The chances of getting shocked by an overhead light fixture are basically zero. And an electrician who uses a UL tag to judge whether to install a fixture is not worth hiring. Wow, I’ve agreed with DIBS!

Thank you. You wrote previously that “I see no means of grounding the fixture which is exactly what you need if something shorts. The diagram shows a plug on the end of the cord and it appears to be a two wire cord (no grounding conductor). So, aside from the possibility of using a plug (which could also be attached to a fixture intended for permanent installation) is the fixture the OP asks about any worse than a new light fixture that comes with just two wires (or should those too be avoided)?

Light fixtures don’t come with plugs, they are meant to be installed permanently. Depending upon the construction of the fixture they will come with two or three wires but most new light fixtures do come with a ground wire (black, white and green or bare). Lamps come with two or three wire plugs.

As a landlord I would say no too… I re-did all my lighting last summer and I had bought this super cool chandelier at the Brooklyn Flee market…My handy man’s electrician came to redo my lighting and switching, he refused to install it, said it was not UL listed, goes to me you bought at flee right, he said he would not risk his reputation installing it… Bottom line, I had to rush out to Lowe’s and buy something else and wasted money on an albeit nice chandelier, but useless…Lesson learned… My two cents.

Nice looking fixture but there are too many variables here. If I were your landlord I would say no. I would expect that most licensed electricians would not want to install this fixture as it becomes their problem if something should go wrong. If something does go wrong your landlord will be quick to blame you. Assuming that you want this fixture installed on a standard outlet box. I see no means of grounding the fixture which is exactly what you need if something shorts. The diagram shows a plug on the end of the cord and it appears to be a two wire cord (no grounding conductor). The UL tag is more than a nice hologram, it means that the fixture has been tested as an assembly and will work as intended. Best of luck whatever you decide.

It’s hard to believe OP appears so naive. A licensed electrician to hang a light? And worrying about UL listing? How the hell can it be UL listed if it’s home made? My advice: don’t buy a place unless you have lots of money to hire handymen. And agreed, either do it or not, don’t ask the landlord. It’s just a light.

IMO there are some things for which you DON’T ask permission. When I was a tenant I’d no more have asked permission to hang a light fixture than I’d have hired an electrician to do it for me. I must have been a terrible tenant; good thing I haven’t been one lo these many years.

As a landlord; I would not allow such a large fixture to be installed by a tenants workers. I would also not allow my worker to install it for a tenant. A landlord is liable for anything and everything that the landlord “allows” their tenant to do. This reminds me of a friend of mine who allowed his tenant to have the tenants licensed electrician (boyfriend) to install a large fixture over their bed. It came crashing down one night, they both sustained “lacerations and bruises” and they sued the landlord. The landlord lost because he “allowed it”. Tenants can never sign their rights away, so no…..

I have bought restored antique fixtures that are not UL listed themselves but the bulb sockets used typically are. If it’s done properly it will never be a problem. Typically if the fixture shorts, it throws the breaker. It doesn’t catch on fire unless there’s some poorly designed non fireproof shade too close to the bulb.
