Hanging a chandelier from parlor medallion

Hello all. I’d like to get a move on to hang an overhead light in our front parlor. I’d like to do this the right way and without any damage to the ceiling medallion. I got some insight from a previous discussion (http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/forums/topic/hanging-overhead-light-from-plaster-medallion/), but I have more questions: -Does anybody have any specific recommendations for licensed electricians who have done this for them? I’d hate to just try my luck with someone clumsy who is not experienced with this type of operation. (I’d be interested to hear more from commenter Tim in the referenced discussion.) -I’m not sure if this area has been wired for electricity. I’d guess it hasn’t because there’s no corresponding wall switch. If it has not yet been wired for electricity, how much does this complicate the job? -Anything I should keep in mind when choosing a light? (Weight, etc…) Thanks in advance for any insight.

That type of canopy was made for an electric fixture; a gas fixture wouldn’t have that open loop at the end.Very likely it’s screwed into an old, and hopefully capped, gas pipe and is strong enough to hold most any fixture you could want. If there’s no wall switch, and you don’t want a pull-chain, an electrician could add one, possibly using the old wireing.

your best bet might be to see if you can get the existing fixture escutcheon off and see exactly how it was anchored. chances are good there is a place to anchor it, if done correctly you could probably hang something substantial. no one could really way without looking up there. but, this does not strike me as anything unordinary, just use someone licensed and reputable and let them know you have a plaster medallion.
